Social Studies Weekly
Year 6 Volume 29 ~ April 29, 2019
Congratulations to Atkins High and North Forsyth High for representing WSFCS at the North Carolina National History Day Competition. The students did a wonderful job. One student, Andrea Rodriguez, from North Forsyth came in 2nd place for her website and is eligible to go to Nationals. There were several students from both schools that earned 3rd place and a few students that earned special awards. Congratulations to both schools and thank you to the hard work of the teachers for helping students gain more understanding of historical research.

Give a Shout Out to an Outstanding Teacher
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. We are all in need of a pick-me-up. If you know an outstanding teacher and want them to know how great they are complete this Google Form and they will receive an e-mail from Melissa with your message. Take a moment out of your day to put a smile on your colleague's face. Let's recognize and support one another.
World History
This week we are finishing up Unit 9: Interwar Years and World War II. One of the supporting objectives for the unit requires students to "analyze the “new” balance of power and the search for peace and stability ..."; this reading on the establishment of the United Nations can assist with addressing this objective.
Civics and Economics
We are finishing up the Economics Unit this week. Next week, we transition into the short unit on trade. This folder contains unit lessons that can be used to teach the entire Trade Unit. Feel free to use all of the lessons as they are or adapt them to fit your needs.
American History 1
We will be wrapping up Unit 5: Manifest Destiny this week. The last part of the unit looks at immigration and nativism. There are numerous readings in PSL/Haiku that can be used. Check them out.
American History 2
At this point, we should be in Unit 7: Conflict and Culture. Here is an interesting article that looks at the changing neighborhoods in the United States. It can provide students an interesting glimpse into the lasting impact of segregation as well as the conflict surrounding gentrification.
The Unit 7 M/C questions are done and ready to be used. You can pull them from the PSL/Haiku Library or use them from the Google Folder.
