RSMS Team Wins Battle of the Books Competition
The Rockwood South Middle School Book Battle Team won first place in the 12th Annual Area-Wide Middle School Book Battle held at Pattonville Heights Middle School on May 3, 2018. The RSMS team competed against forty-one teams from other middle schools in the St. Louis area. Librarian Janet Griffard sponsored the team.
The Battle of the Books is a team competition for readers that is formatted like a trivia night. All of the questions relate to titles on a master list of twenty popular books for middle school students. Participants work with their teams to make sure all twenty books on the master list are read. Teams meet throughout the year to prepare by talking about the books and quizzing each other about what they have read.
This year's Book Battle also marks the first time a team from Rockwood Valley Middle School has entered the competition. RVMS librarian and team sponsor Angie Kohout says the team members had a fine showing a great time.
Fourth Grade Students Create Videos
At Ballwin Elementary School, fourth-grade students used WeVideo to create “I Am” videos about themselves and what they stand for. Parents helped by sending pictures their children could incorporate into their films. Those movie-making skills were used again to create videos about famous Missourians after each student researched a well-known person from the Show-Me State. The engaging lessons were part of library time with librarian Kristin Clark.
Babler's Ellis Island
Third-grade students at Babler Elementary relived the past as part of their study of immigration. The library was transformed into the holding room and detention center of Ellis Island while the third-grade classrooms were turned into the medical, baggage, interview, and registry rooms. Students started their journeys in the holding room rotated through all the locations. Some were sent to the detention center in the library. Librarian Jenny Starling collaborates with the third-grade teachers to organize this annual event.
Pond Students Enjoy Camp Read-A-Lot
The Pond Elementary Library was recently transformed into a campground. The crackling fire, chirping of crickets and light from flashlights welcomed Pond Panthers to Camp Read-A-Lot. The campers cozied up with their books and flashlights under the stars, in tents, and in front of the campfire! Their love of reading and sharing books at Camp Read-A-Lot made a memorable experience for all! Pond librarian Christy Beeman organized the event.
