4th Grade STAAR Writing Test on Tuesday, March 29th
All 4th grade students will be taking the STAAR writing test on Tuesday. PTO is providing a snack of Nutri-Grain bar, bag of pretzels, banana and water to all 4th graders on testing days. Students will be testing throughout the building, so we ask that visits to campus on testing days be kept at a minimal, and visitors will not be allowed in any testing rooms or at lunch with 4th grade students. If you have a 4th grade student, please make sure that he/she gets plenty of rest the night before the tests, and arrive at school on time. LVES will wish our 4th graders "Good Luck" on Monday afternoon, by cheering them on as they take a Victory Walk around the campus. Kindergarten through 3rd grade classes also wrote letters of encouragement for each of our 4th grade classes.

Pre-K and Kindergarten Round Up
Calling all future Pre-K and Kindergarten students! April 7th from 8:00-6:00 is Pre-K and Kindergarten Round-Up for the 2016-2017 school year. If your child is eligible to register for Pre-K or Kindergarten, you must bring your child’s birth certificate, social security card, and proof of residency. There are additional eligibility requirements for Pre-K students. If you have specific questions about registration, please contact our registrar, Veronica Fidencio at veronica_fidencio@lagovista.txed.net. We look forward to seeing all of our future Vikings on April 7th!
Dress Code Reminders

It's always a good idea to leave the sandals, flip flops and dress shoes at home, as our students have PE and/or recess everyday. Tennis shoes are a much safer shoe option for our LVES Vikings, especially on PE days.

Counselor's Corner
Sleep and how it affects performance and behavior:
We are continuing to discuss our March character trait, Responsibility. We have discussed how responsible students take care of themselves by eating healthy, brushing their teeth, and being prepared for school each day. One very important way you can help your child be mentally and emotionally prepared for school is to make sure they get enough sleep every night and especially on school nights.
A sleep study was conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics looking at sleep deprivation and how it affects children and their behavior. They concluded that lack of sleep has a direct impact on a child’s behavior and specifically affects the behavior of children with attention issues. The recommendation for school-age children is 9-11 hours of quality sleep each night to function well. Less sleep causes children to be more emotional, have more behavioral issues, and difficulty focusing on their work.
Following these sleep tips, consistently, will get your children in a good sleep routine-making it easier on everyone in the long run:
Have a calm nightly routine (dinner, bath, story-time, bed)
Set a consistent bedtime so they get their 9-11 hours
Keep electronics out of their room at night
Keep their room cool, dark, and quiet

Weekly Attendance Rate
- 93%
Our 3rd nine week attendance average was 95%, so we did not meet our goal of at least 97%. We will still keep that goal going into our last grading period of the 2015-2016 school year.
