OCE Principal's Message

FROM MRS. LANGSTON TO MAXIMIZE HOME AND SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

The Summer Slide

OCE Parents & Guardians,

Are you familiar with the term, Summer Slide? In a Children's Literacy Initiative blog post, 5 Tips for Preventing Summer Slide, the term is defined as, "What happens when the skills students learn during the school year are lost or forgotten over the summer." We want OCE Blue Jays to enjoy their summer and to not experience this type of Summer Slide. Please visit our school website for summer learning resources prepared by our teachers to help your children maintain their knowledge and skills.

On behalf of the OCE faculty and staff, thank you OCE parents and guardians for your support throughout the school year. We are fortunate to have a partnership with our families that adds great value to both teaching and learning at our school. We wish you a safe and happy summer!

A Fond Farewell & Welcome!

Blue Jay Families,

Here's a message from Mrs. Julie Armiger:

Hello OCE Families!

I can’t believe it’s the end of the school year! It seems we always plan for August and December, but May takes us by surprise. As a parent, I’m always wondering how I’m going to keep my kids busy (and I often wait until the last minute to plan). Here’s a link of some things you can do with your kids this summer - Summer Ideas. I hope this helps fill up your summer!

Change is hard, and with summer comes change! I’ve been talking to a lot of kids this week who are anxious about summer and already nervous for next year. If your kids are feeling this way, please assure them it’s okay to be nervous. May times instead of validating our kids’ feelings, we tell them, “Don’t feel that way.” Let your kids know it’s normal to be anxious and nervous about change, then remind them of all their accomplishments and how well they have handled change in the past. Let them know how much you believe in them and how confident you are that they will be successful no matter what changes they face.

Speaking of change, my youngest child is going to middle school next year! For 15 years (12 straight) I have had a child in Oyster Creek Elementary. Oyster Creek has played a big part in my family's life, and we consider it home. With my youngest child moving on, it’s the perfect time for me to grow professionally. Next year, I will be taking on the challenge of opening a new school in FBISD. I will cherish my 14 years at OCE, and I leave knowing it’s in great hands!

Thank you for letting me guide your children, and have a great summer!

**We'd like to welcome Mrs. Alicia McKinzy to Oyster Creek. Mrs. McKinzy comes to OCE with ten years of elementary and secondary counseling experience. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in counseling. We look forward to Mrs. McKinzy serving THE best students and families in Fort Bend ISD and becoming a Blue Jay!

G.E.M.S. Girls Exploring Math and Science

A huge 'Thank you' goes out to our students who chose to use their monetary award from the Houston Museum of Science (G.E.M.S. competition), to purchase an additional component for the school's 3-D printer, create a painting for the school dedicated to their love of science, and finally to establish a scholarship for girls interested in participating in next year's competition. Go Blue Jays!
