History of Earth Day
In 1972 Gaylord Nelson was concerned about the environment. He thought that if someone didn't do something soon that our beautiful earth would start to become nothing but cities and all the beautiful trees in the forest would suddenly be gone. Nelson went to the capitol hoping that he could convince President Kennedy to do something about all the environmental issues in the world. Kennedy went on a tour around the U.S. to speak about this problem, but sadly it wasn't a success. Nelson talked to people from 25 different states but no politicians would listen. Nelson told the country at a conference that in Spring 1970 he would hold a nation wide demonstration about the earth. 20 million people joined in on his demonstration nationally. In 1971 the UN secretary-general made Earth Day an international holiday.
