Weekly Family Update # 23
January 24, 2021
Hello Falcon Families,
What is all of this water falling from sky?? It has been so long since it has rained. I hope you have enjoyed this cold and rainy weekend. At my house, we made potato leek soup, watched The Goonies, did a puzzle, and played with Legos, lots of rainy weekend activities. My puppy Jovie, did not enjoy the rain…
Virtual Learning and Engagement
As we reflect as a staff on the school year so far, and what we want to accomplish with our students as we move forward, our Falcon Faculty continues to seek out new ways to engage our students in virtual learning while also trying new ways to connect students with other students and with our school community as a whole. We will continue to survey our students and get feedback on what is working well to increase the positive experiences of our students. As I look at my own kids as they Zoom from home, we all understand that learning from home can be isolating and we are committed to help.
With our commitment to increasing engagement and connectedness in mind, we need your help! We ask that parents ensure that students turn on their cameras during Zoom. Some students are hesitant for different reasons, but it is really best practice. How can our teachers connect with and engage our students if we never see their face? We really appreciate your partnership as we work to improve the experience for our students.
Next Week's Class Schedule: January 25-29
Next week is a four-day week. All four days are block days and begin at 8:30 AM. Friday is a non-school day. We have a district-wide professional development day. There is no school or asynchronous work assigned on this day.
· Monday (1/25) ODD periods plus Connections
· Tuesday (1/26) EVEN periods plus Office Hours
· Wednesday (1/27) ODD periods plus Office Hours
· Thursday (1/28) EVEN periods plus Connections
· Friday (1/29) District-wide professional growth day.
Thanks for all you do for our Oak Valley Community! Go Falcons!

Mrs. Sheehy Retires!
This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has developed an online testing platform that will allow Oak Valley to host a school spelling bee program, whether your children are learning in classrooms or remotely from your homes.
In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold one level of competition through an online spelling test. The first step to spelling bee participation is for you to register for the Scripps National Spelling Bee's online testing platform by visiting: https://online-test.spellingbee.com
We encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ThKRsffiFc
Once you have registered, we will send you the test and deadline information. Your child must complete the test before the given deadline, and these tests can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
The student with the highest score will become our OVMS Champion. Our school champion will then move on to represent Oak Valley in the San Diego County regional spelling bee program, which also may include online tests in lieu of in-person spelling bee events.
Please register at your earliest convenience as we will begin assigning tests to students soon. The deadline to sign up is Thursday, January 28. If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.
Please reach out to us if you have any questions about our school spelling bee program. We look forward to having your child compete to represent our school!
Again, the deadline to sign up is Thursday, January 28.

YES THERE IS A YEARBOOK THIS YEAR! And it is going to be all about you!
If you did not get your photo taken at school this year by Lifetouch please review the selfie guide attachment and submit a photo by this Friday January 29th. Please have it just be your headshot like in the guidelines.
In addition if you would like to also upload other photos to share in the yearbook such as fun things you have done, sports or a picture of you and your dog (we have a full pets page) then go ahead!!
You can upload all your photos with the link below.
Thank you so much for all of your support.

No Best Buddies Club This Year
It is with great disappointment that Best Buddies announces the shuddering of our operations. The pandemic, virtual learning, and social distancing has made organizing this club the way it deserves to be organized a challenge with few solutions due to our current climate. It is with best intentions that we move ahead full steam next year and we hope to see YOU there with us! In the meantime, make a new friend, start a conversation with someone you've never talked to at lunch, be an ally. We can all be a part of the change that we wish to see in the world.
Intradistrict Transfer Requests
For students who live in another school district and would like to attend a PUSD school, PUSD will accept Interdistrict Attendance Permit requests for the 2021-2022 school year starting February 1, 2021. Please note that the document must first be signed by your district of residence before it is submitted to PUSD.
Decisions on transfers are made by the Student Attendance and Discipline Office, not Oak Valley Middle School staff.
PUSD February Break is Shortened this Year
A reminder to PUSD families that the 2021 February break has been shortened from five days off to just two days off due to COVID-related adjustments to the 2020-21 school year calendar.
There is no school on Monday, February 15 and Friday, February 19 due to the observance of Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays.
However, school will be in session Tuesday through Thursday, February 16 through February 18, so students are expected to attend class as normal on those three days.
Spring Break remains the same, Monday, April 12 through Friday, April 16.
The last day of school was changed to Friday, June 18, 2021. You can view the official District calendar here.
Book Donations in Memory of Mrs. Chiu
In memory of Mrs. Chiu, our ASB students have created a Wishlist of children's books through Amazon. We will be collecting these books to honor her and work to spread her legacy of light and love to others. All of the books that we receive will be labeled with an honorary bookplate and then donated to Rady's Children's Hospital.
The link to the wishlist can be found HERE.
The collection window will close on February 1st. Our OVMS ASB thanks everyone in our community for their support and love.
PTSA Art Corps--Volunteers Needed!
We hope to offer three lessons per class over that time period, so we hope to have several volunteers in each class. You do not need to have an art background. Art Corps lessons are being modified to be delivered via distance learning, and we plan on a brief orientation (virtual) as soon as we collect the names of all interested parent volunteers and finalize the modified program details. Please sign up if you are interested in learning more: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090C45AEAB2FA7FB6-ovms7

New Weekly Bell Schedule And Monthly Calendar
Don't forget, we started our new Weekly Schedule after Winter Break. This schedule should be much simpler and easier to follow for students.
Please see the attached weekly bell schedule HERE and below.
There is also a new monthly calendar attached HERE and below. We will follow this same weekly schedule pattern for the reminder of the year, unless the School Board changes our current school model, with the exception of a few weeks where we have to adjust for holidays. Please look at both of these documents closely.
