The river goes through George Town.It starts in Moore County,then the river goes between the Cape Fear Basin and goes to the Yadkin Pee Dee river basin. Afterwards it ends up in the Atlantic Ocean.
Plant Organisms
SUNDEW
Sundews are 'flypaper' plants that trap prey in sticky hairs on their leaves.
ORCHID
Known for their beauty and has a huge variety. Has the largest plant family in the world.
VENUS FLYTRAP
The Venus flytrap is a type of flowering plant that is best known for exhibiting carnivora. The “trap” is made of two hinged lobes at the end of each leaf.
Aquatic Organisms
YELLOWLAMP MUSSEL
The Yellow Lampmussel is a medium to large sized freshwater mussel that can measure up to 5.1 inches (130 mm) in length. Smooth and has a shiny, yellowish appearance that darkens with age.
WEST INDIAN MANATEE
West Indian manatees are large, gray aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. They have two forelimbs, called flippers, with three to four nails on each flipper. Their head and face are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout.
RED BREASTED SUNFISH
The redbreast sunfish is laterally compressed or flattened like other sunfishes; however, it has a more elongated body than other sunfishes. The redbreast's body is a bluish-green that fades into a bright orange-yellow belly in females and a deep orange-red belly in males.
Land Organisms
RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER
About the size of the common cardinal, the red-cockaded woodpecker is approximately 7 inches long (18 to 20 centimeters), with a wingspan of about 15 inches (35 to 38 centimeters). Its back is barred with black and white horizontal stripes. The red-cockaded woodpecker's most distinguishing feature is a black cap and nape that encircle large white cheek patches.
WHITE-TAIL DEER
White-tailed Deer are reddish-brown with a white belly and tail in Summer. In Winter, the reddish-brown changes to grayish-brown. Male deer, called bucks, have antlers, up to three feet across, on their heads. Female deer, called does, and baby deer, called fawns, do not have antlers.
MINK
The mink is larger than the weasel and is usually dark brown with a white throat patch. It has a large, bushy tail that is often slightly darker than the body. Its dark fur has a beautiful sheen; its fur has brought recognition to the mink for many years.
THE POLLUTION
House hold chemicals are dumped into the water storm runoff.The energy plants are also dumping waste into the river which contaminates the river. One solution is to try to convince people not to dump waste and chemicals into the water and to show them the out come of what could happen if they continue to do so.
