Trantwood Times
"Captivating Every Student, Every Day!"
Congratulations Mrs. Z - the new Coordinator of Recruitment and Retention. Words cannot express how sad we are to lose you. Please remember, once a Cardinal - always a Cardinal. We hope you will visit often. Best wishes in your new position!
Welcome, Karen O'Meara, to the nest ! We are delighted you are here and look forward to getting to know you. I hear you love the outdoors!
An Attitude of Gratitude Rocks! I am grateful for....
- the many wonderful people who help Melissa and I during pizza parties. We have not had time to thank them at the moment but we are SO GRACIOUS! Megan Bailey
- the entire OFFICE STAFF, Nancy, Terry, Mechele and Barb for keeping Trantwood up and running!!! Butch Ellis
- Terry Hill. Her diligence and communication with me when registering new student makes it possible to keep track of the many medical requirements and needs of our cardinals! Barb Iman
- Anne Glenn-Zeljeznjak who allows me to close the door and decompress when my “stomach and headaches” become overwhelming. Barb Iman
- all of the classroom teachers who have a truly difficult job of balancing teaching with screening the many requests they get daily of “I need to go to the clinic”, not to mention everything else required of you in the classroom. Barb Iman
- Michele Flynn for backing me up in the clinic. Barb Iman
the opportunity to have worked, sang and danced with Anne! Your Office Staff
Persi Charalambous who has been diligently organizing our inventory in the book room. She has been re-labeling book boxes and making everything much easier for teachers to find. Kudos Persi!!! Jan Roewer
On 9/29, there was an accident that trapped most of Trantwood’s buses and made for a stressful dismissal. So many staff members just stepped up to assist wherever necessary and also the teachers who maintained a lot of children in the classrooms. The final students did not leave here until almost 4:00. It showed the team spirit that we were all working together. Terry Hill
Gretchen Barreto, Katie Schatti, and Jenn Hawkins make an amazing first grade team! Thank you, ladies, for always being there for each other and our students! Melissa Moore
I am thankful for all of the help and advice that Mrs. Z has given to me over the years. I can attribute most of my knowledge about special needs children to her. For that and so much more, I am very thankful to her. Stephanie Piron
I would like to thank Anne for all of the time and effort she has put into helping our students throughout her years here—she will be missed! And I would like to thank Karen O’Meara for being so warm and helpful during this overwhelming transition process, we are so glad to have her here! Lisa Lee

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR K-2 CLASSROOM TEACHERS: RESEARCH-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVELY TEACHING STRUGGLING READERS
The Department of Teaching and Learning is pleased to provide nine sessions of the Struggling Reader Academy professional learning opportunity through the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education during the 2016-2017 school year. The noncredit course, designed to teach educators the basics of literacy instruction, will be tailored to each stage of literacy development. The course consists of four full days of instruction. Topics to be addressed during the course include: an overview of literacy development, reading disability and Response to Intervention (RTI), phonological awareness and phonics, using assessment to guide instruction and strategies to increase fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
The dates and locations for the course sessions were sent to you in an email on September 29. Funding for the cost of the course and for substitutes for the teachers who will be attending will be provided by the Department of Teaching and Learning. All classroom teachers of core content in grades K-2 who have not participated in a Struggling Reader Academy for any grade level in the past are eligible to attend. If the available seats are not filled by classroom teachers in grades K-2, seats will be opened to special education teachers of grades K-2 and then to classroom teachers of grade 3. Teachers who complete the four full-day sessions will receive 26 licensure renewal points plus four professional learning points for homework assignments completed outside of class time.
The nine sessions will provide a total of 270 seats, which will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
