Week 6, Term 1

Deputy Principal's Message

Tena koutou katoa

Greetings everyone and I hope this week’s panui finds you well. To those of our school whānau who may be isolating or are unwell due to Covid19, we wish you all the best, we miss you and remember to take care of yourselves and look forward to your return to school.

Last week I had the pleasure of going on an overnight camp with the Hautapu House Leaders into the Maungakawa Ranges, east of Cambridge. The camp was an opportunity for the students to explore their backyard, learn about the native bush and experience camp making skills of setting up shelters and cooking their own food. The camp was a huge success and the House Leaders stepped up by displaying all of our values of Challenge, Courage, Explore, Community and Growth. Among the camp highlights was hiking, feeding the deer, building huts, making shelters, tying knots, playing spotlight, learning about the bush and cooking and eating the food.

A special thank-you must go to Frank Spence and Jenny Taylor as adult support. Both brought huge enthusiasm and an appreciation of the environment to share with our students. Frank who also supported with camping equipment, food, bush survival knowledge, making kawakawa tea and a few of the lamest jokes we have ever heard!

I’d also like to acknowledge the Schick whānau for allowing us to stay on their beautiful property as well as Will Mason and Anthony McGovern for building and locating the long drop next to the campsite. Hunting and Fishing Cambridge also deserve mention with some great deals on our fly cover shelters. Without everyone’s support the camp would not have been the success it was. Our House Leaders thoroughly enjoyed this experience and we look forward to this becoming an annual event and growing this for more students to be involved in the future as part of Hautapu’s Local Curriculum.

All the best to our community over the coming weeks, stay safe and look after yourselves.

Kia kaha

House Leaders Maungakawa Camp

On the 3rd of March 2022 the Hautapu House Leaders embarked on a trip into the bush. We learnt how to set up camp in the wilderness and even cook your own food. We tied fly covers to the trees and set up our places to sleep underneath. We went on a walk for a couple of hours and even saw some deer! We got to feed the huge stag some deer pellets and saw some of the little bambi deer. Overall this camp was amazing and I am so glad that we had the opportunity to do this.

Madison Hoebergen

Hi, I'm Madi and I’m the house leader of Waikato House for 2022. I am looking forward to new leadership/learning opportunities and to explore my limits more. I enjoy drawing, dancing and playing games with my friends. I hope I see you around school and I hope I can be a good house leader to both staff and students.

Ellie Harfoot

Hi, I’m Ellie, and I’m one of the Waikato House Leaders for 2022. I love to go outdoors, explore new places, and play sports. My favorite sports include swimming and netball, because they are fun, challenging, and some of my closest friends play with me. I also enjoy public speaking and speeches because I think it’s a really good way to build confidence when having to present or talk to others. On top of this, I love to go camping with my friends and family, head down to the beach and have some fun! I’m always happy to help out, and I am always open to new ideas.

Kia ora
