FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School :: February 18th, 2014
The FHS is a monthly on-line school newsletter. It will be emailed to you through School Reach. There will be weekly reminders of important events and activities that are planned for the upcoming week.
Dear Parents and Members of the OLQHS Community
Last week, Mrs. Jackson and I traveled to Baton Rouge to attend a “School Safety” in-service. It was extremely informative. The seminar showed me that OLQHS is really a pretty safe place compared to other educational institutions. There are ways to better insure the safety of the students who attend Our Lady Queen of Heaven. One idea I will look into is a Mobile App that can be placed on teachers’ cell phone. The app would provide information to the teacher, if there ever were an emergency situation where communication was crucial. Another idea that I will look into is to see if our new PA System can be accessed remotely and if it has the capability of sounding an alarm. These ideas seem simple but could be very important in an emergency situation.
The 8th graders have been given their Chromebooks. I want to thank all the 8th grade parents for coming to one of the meetings that were held to insure the cooperation between the school and the parents. It is important that the school works with the parents to guarantee the safety of the students. There have been some issues but everyone is learning exactly what the Chromebooks are capable of and what the students are capable of. The teachers are learning right along with the students. I am seeing some great things begin to happen. Remember 8th grade parents we want your feedback!!
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
OLQHS is an in creditable place to be!
Ms. JoAnn Wallwork
Our Faith
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a penitential season observed by many Christians. While the exact date of Ash Wednesday varies from year to year, it is always in either the month of February or March, depending on where Easter falls in the liturgical year. On Ash Wednesday, worshippers attend services at which they receive ashes on their foreheads. The pastor marks the forehead of each worshipper, often saying "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return."
The ashes consist of burned palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday service. The ashes are blessed by a priest or pastor.
Ashes are viewed throughout Christian history as a symbol of humility and sacrifice for those who wear them.
In earlier times, Christians who committed serious sins did public penance. As part of this, they were sprinkled with ashes and required to wear sack cloths. In later years, penitents were also turned away from their place of worship for the entire season of Lent until Holy (Maundy) Thursday, by which time they had atoned for their sins. Eventually all Christians came to receive ashes in acts of devotion as well.
While Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, it is the start of one of the most important seasons in the Christian liturgical year. Since fasting is an integral part of the Lenten season, it is strongly encouraged, and even required, of most Christian worshippers on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics and members of some other denominations also abstain from meat on all Fridays during Lent.2015-2016 Registration Packets

Instant Wisdom
A few things you need to know about Cyberbullying…
The instant access that cell phones and the Internet provide means that children need to use common sense when it comes to cyber communication. This includes knowing how to handle cyberbullies who use text, email, voice, and instant messages, as well as photos to embarrass, insult, and unnerve kids.
A 2007 study of approximately 2,000 middle school students in grades 6 through 8 found that 42.9% of them had at least one of the following experiences in the last 30 days:
1. Received an email or an instant message that made them upset:
2. Had something posted on a social networking site that made them upset
3. Had been made fun of in a chat room
4. Had something posted on a Web site that made them upset
5. Had something posted online that they did not want others to see, were afraid to go on the computer
6. About the same number of students reported being victims of cyberbullying as being bullies—17%
Parents need to monitor, check and communicate with their child about the use of technology.

Revised Fluency Targets for OLQHS 2st Graders
To measure students' oral reading speed and accuracy, researchers have developed a simple and very brief procedure that uses regular classroom texts to determine the number of words that students can read correctly in one minute. To obtain a words-correct-per-minute (WCPM) score, students are assessed individually as they read aloud for one minute from an unpracticed passage of text. For the last four years we have used the 3-Minute Reading Assessments developed by Dr. Timothy V. Rasinski, who by the way is the same person who developed the Fast Start program we use in the Pre K and K. We administer these assessments three times a year to our first and second graders.
An analysis of the last four years fluency data has led us to the conclusion that we need to raise the target reading rates for our 2nd graders. Based on the testing data of 250 OLQHS students over a period of four years (2011-2014), we have come up with these new, higher targets as shown on the chart below. As the final row indicates, the average fluency rate of OLQHS 2nd grade students over the course of the last four years is well above the older expected levels. We have great students and teachers!

Villa Maria
DON'T EVER BE DEPRESSED! Elderly depression is an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and helplessness in our elderly population. According to The Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Assn., it affects over six million Americans, but only 10% receive treatment. Some reasons for lack of treatment include lack of financial resources or it can sometimes be confused with medical conditions such as a stroke or Alzheimer's Disease. Some factors that can contribute to elderly depression include LONELINESS and/or loss of a spouse. Come LIVE at Villa Maria and live a happy and fulfilling life.

OLQHS is a Cell Phone Free Zone
Please when driving through carline; remember that school zones are cell phone free zones. The crossing guards as well as duty teachers have noticed that there are quite a few people who are on their cell phones while picking up their children. When the Louisiana legislature voted the cell phone free zones into law, I am sure they were concerned with the safety of the children of Louisiana.
