In the beginning of the story, Doug Swieteck has just moved to a small in town called Marysville. While he is their he meets a girl named Lillian Spicer but she goes by Lil, she soon offers a job to Doug to deliver groceries to people around town and be payed in tips and in salary every other Saturday. He also finds this library with a special book in it that Doug is very interested in. It is a bird that is tumbling down into the cold, dark ocean as Doug describes it. Through out the story, from the beginning to the end, Doug's writing skills get better and better because he is taught by one of the librarians, Mr.Powell.
In the middle of the book is where the reader can see (or read) how Doug and his family and his life general becomes progressively better. Also, Doug's second oldest brother, Lucas, return's from the raging Vietnam War with no legs and is blind. While Lucas is with Doug, Doug try's to make Lucas'es life better and trying to keep his mind off of what Lucas has seen while in the Vietnam War.
At the very end of the book, Doug's writing skills have improved significantly, his fathers and Christopher's personality's have changed and have bettered themselves. All is going well for Doug, their is nothing wrong with anything,and most importantly, Doug can finally have happiness. He can share his happiness with other people, and this time their is nothing their to ruin it anymore.
