A Message from our Principal...
Dear Jefferson Families,
This week we realized that we passed the 150 days mark for school days. Quite an accomplishment for this particular year. Students and staff have adapted to so much change. They have learned things far beyond what we might have imagined. They are making the final days of this school year look easy! For example, this week, state testing started and students and staff have shown flexibility, patience, and determination and have taken this important activity in stride. We are so proud of our students. There are a few more jam-packed weeks before we put this year in the history book! Please read below to learn of some important happenings.
Spring has arrived and with it great weather in which to be outside a lot more. Please help us gently remind our students to continue their efforts to be safe. As students walk to and from school, the bus stop, and the car lines, we want to remind them to look both ways and to pay attention to their surroundings. Everyone is so excited about being out and about and may have forgotten some basic safety habits.
Please don’t forget to register your child for next year. Our registration is open and the deadline is May 21st. Registration can be done online. It can also be done in our school office. Fees are waived, but it is vitally important for us to know who will be attending school in the fall. And as always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Jefferson School Families.
Most Sincerely,
Dr. Judy Floeter

Bee Mindful...
Hello Harvard parents,
Many of our Jefferson students recently participated in a Second Step lesson that taught them about the meaning of culture and symbolism that is represented in state or national flags. The lesson was titled "Class Flags". Scholars were given a blank sheet of paper and encouraged to draw or write whatever is culturally important to them so everyone would be represented on their class flag. The final step was explaining what different animals and colors symbolized so they could vote what should be included in the center of the flag. We have attached a few examples and the lesson if you would like to create a "Family Flag" at home.

Student Council News
Check out what's happening in the library!
April is National Poetry month. Jefferson’s 5th graders worked hard to create their own Concrete poems, Limericks and Quatrains while the 4th grade enjoyed learning about Couplets, Quatrains, Free verse and many more while reading Gone Fishing: a Novel in Verse by Tamera Will Wissinger. We are so pleased and excited about the creativity and eagerness that the students expressed during these lessons.
As you know, the school year ended rather abruptly last year. A lot of library books were checked out at that time and have not been returned, even now, a year later. Because so many books are still outstanding, the last day to check out books at Jefferson, will be Friday, April 30th. We will concentrate on getting books returned and fines paid during the month of May. Notices will be given to the students regarding any outstanding books and/or fines. One of the key things we teach at Jefferson, in addition to being respectful and safe, is to be responsible. Please help your student practice responsibility by helping them look for their books and/or paying any fines so they can start the 2021-2022 school year with a clean slate. Thank you for your support.
Library books can be returned to any school in the district. They do not need to be returned to the school they came from. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Maggie Binz (mbinz@cusd50.org) or Heather Kriete (hkriete@cusd50.org).
Spring into Reading with Congresswoman Lauren Underwood
How does it work? Students should have a parent or guardian complete this form giving the student permission to participate. Congresswoman Underwood's Office will send the parent or guardian a book log sheet and additional information including deadlines and information on how to submit the student's finished book log to the office.
Students will have until the end of June to read at least 10 books. All participants will be invited to a special celebration with the Congresswoman in the summer and receive a small prize for their participation. The student in each grade who reads the most books will receive a special recognition from the Congresswoman!
How can you share? Please feel free to share this opportunity with anyone you think might be interested in participating. Below is a link to the reading program page that has the sign up links as well as facebook post from the Congresswoman if you would like to share.
