13 Colonies By Logan and Ryan F.
The 13 Colonies were Delaware, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Maryland.
Most people came to the new land because they wanted to practice different religions without being killed or tortured. There were also other people who arrived before the colonists at such places as Roanoke and Jamestown because they heard there was gold there and wanted it for themselves. At first the Indians didn't like the English coming over to America, and there were fights that got many people killed.
Their economic luxuries were things like wood, which was very popular because there was little wood left in England. They also had fur coats, which were made out of animal pelts. Another luxury they had was oil, which was used to help their lamps run. The ocean was also plentiful with fish and whales. There were farms that harvested corn, tobacco, and wheat. They also had herds of cows and sheep. This was the life of the colonists that lived in the new America.
Kickoff Book Review By: Carlie
This book called Kickoff is about a girl named Tyra Fraser who moved from Florida to the North of England. Tyra Fraser had a best friend in Florida but they had to move because her parents told her she had to. Tyra is nervous about moving to England but she is also a little bit excited.
When she gets to England she goes to a different school after a week or a couple of days in England. Tyra decides to join a soccer team and she becomes the best one on the team. Tyra always scored the winning goal when the team needed it. Tyra meets a girl named Alicia who is known as a bully to the school. Alicia did not like Tyra because she thought that Tyra was showing off her soccer skills. Alicia did a lot of bad things to Tyra but they weren't to bad. Near the end Alicia thought about it and realized that Tyra was not a bad person. They had become friends in the championship game after they won. Tyra was so happy she decided to stay in England instead of going back to Florida.
Editorial: Please Reopen Dell St. By: Alex and Emily
We think Dell street should be reopened. The reason is because it is safer for our school. When you are going to your meeting spot, the person that picks you up should be there, but in some cases they are not and so there you are all by yourself. Where as on Dell, if someone isn't there, then you go back to the office with the crosswalk people and your parents come to pick you up there. That's just one example. There are many more reasons why Dell should be reopened.
Another reason, is that opening Dell Street will decongest traffic for school. Having another pick-up option besides the front of school makes it better for everyone. It will definitely be easier for parents when they come to pick up their kids. That is a great thing for students and parents. That is why Dell Street should be reopened.
As of last week we have learned that Dell street is now open for pick up after school only. We would like to thank Mrs.Denham for allowing this to happen. There will be people up at Dell to supervise students, control the crosswalk, and make sure that kids get picked up. If you do not have your child picked up by 3:15, then they will be at the office for you. This is great news we get to share with you! We are excited that Dell Street will be open on Monday, May 18th!
Back in Time Colonial Day By: Andrew and Kendall
Colonial Day is almost here! It is the only day where you can dress up like people who lived in the late 1700's. Only the 5th grade is lucky enough to have this day. This special day is May 27th. At 2:15, we have a heritage performance where we sing songs and dance. The best part about it is that parents are allowed to come to watch their children perform! Another unique part of this day is that everybody dresses up. "My favorite part about Colonial Day is dressing up and learning about this time period in our history," said our classmate Amaris.
A popular costume for girls is long skirts and sleeved blouses with maybe even an apron. A suggested costume for boys are poofy shirts and pants that are dark. In addition, hats, belts, and vests can make your costume be the best! The whole fifth grade can't wait for this one of a kind day to come!
Ask Astrid
Dear Astrid,
Some of my friends have been acting strange around me, and weren't playing with me at recess. Both my friend and I are feeling this way. It's hurting my feelings, and I don't know how to tell them. Please help me figure out a way to solve this problem!
From,
Confused Student
Dear Confused Student,
One thing you can do is try to play with some other students. Another thing you can do is tell them privately that they are hurting your feelings. If all else fails, you can ask Mrs. Jill to help you solve the problem.
Good luck,
Astrid
Top 5
For our top 5 choice we chose to write about elements. We chose to write about elements because our class is studying them. First we asked everyone what element they liked, and why they like elements. For example Carlie likes elements "because they are fascinating and cool". After we surveyed our class, we learned the top 5 favorite elements.
Gold-12
Uranium-5
Oxygen-4
Silicon-3
Hydrogen-1
Most people in our room prefer gold!
Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not So Happily Ever After By: Greta
Over the past month I have been reading the book Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not So Happily Ever After by Rachel Renee Russell. In this book the main character Nikki Maxwell, was busy wondering if the kiss that Brandon gave her in the last book was just for the cause she was doing or if he really meant it. While she was wondering about that she was playing dodge ball when suddenly her arch enemy, Mackenzie, cornered her and said "Eat this Maxwell!" And threw the ball right at her face. Nikki wobbled around and then collapsed.
She "woke up" in a strange land surrounded by a bunch of little people. They helped her and took pictures of her falling on top of the wicked witch, Mackenzie, which is the name of her arch nemesis. They said Mackenzie was going to come after her. Then her fairy god mother that looked EXACTLY like her little sister Brianna and that was also how her name appeared. She said that she could help her along the way to defeating Mackenzie the wicked witch and that when she needed her to just call for her.
Soon she meets many characters that look just like her friends, enemies and her crush. She meets characters like the Queen of Hearts, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, and many more. And, each character has something to do with someone in her real life. You have to read the rest to find out what happens next! This book is filled with a lot of adventures and comedy and I recommend it to people that would love a book with a few twists and turns plus a good laugh! This book is the 8th of the Dork Diaries series and if you want to read the others you should check out those too!
Skydance 2015
This year, all of the the Skyline classes will be participating in Skydance. Skydance is a film contest that will happen this May.
Some genres our class thought of are: mystery, mythical, prehistoric, action, comedy, sports, and futuristic. Lots of the students want to make a comedy.
"Last year it was so much fun because I won an award," said Kendall in our class.
" At Skydance we are allowed to wear fancy stuff like celebrities. It is almost like the Oscar awards!" said Daniella.
"It was fun," stated Eric.
Mrs. Goodman decided that we are doing small groups of 5. For homework, we had to create our own story bubble map. We get to have a mini Skydance in our class and maybe submit one of them to the school festival, if we finish in time.
In conclusion, Skydance will be so exciting this year.

CASSP Testing By Ryann R. and Will
We finished CAASP testing earlier this month. We have some observations about this test that might be important to hear regarding the setting, strategies and other things. We asked some people what strategies they used. Most people said they used the process of elimination. Others calculated in their heads, and thus thought the test was more challenging. Some people used the scratch paper to write out the problems. Process of elimination was probably the best strategy to use. In addition, people said they used their math facts for most of the problems. Although people have used math facts for other tests, this one was much harder. The room was tense during testing. Everyone was really focused and quiet in the test because they knew it was important. We hope people did well on these tests. We believe that our class was prepared because we have been learning all about how to do this math, writing, science, and more in class. Mrs. G is really good at explaining these things.
