The #RoyalFam Newsletter
6/2/2021
This will be the final The #RoyalFam Newsletter of the 2020-2021 school year. Have a wonderful summer!
A Message from Principal Ballard:
The end of the school year brings many emotions for me. While I am excited that we have completed a year, I am energized by the possibilities of the 2021-2022 school year. Soon we will say our goodbyes to the class of 2021 and welcome the class of 2024. This year was filled with opportunities to challenge our beliefs around school time, path, place, relevant content, the role of digital tools and many other ideologies. We came together as a school community to discuss very complex and sometimes even polarizing topics and concepts with grace. We received lots of critical feedback in efforts to improve our school and the scholar experience at HHS. Thank you! Our scholars innovated and during a pandemic new clubs and groups were birthed. They are brilliant. I look forward to connecting with you over the summer regarding plans for fall. I appreciate all you have given to support Hopkins High School. We cannot exist without you. THANK YOU!

Grading During the Pandemic - June 7th Deadline:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Hopkins High School is adopting a temporary practice allowing our scholars to elect P’s for passing grades, in lieu of the letter grade that was earned. We understand that Distance Learning is challenging, and far from ideal, for many of our scholars. This practice will be in place for the duration of the pandemic.
Letter grades of D will automatically be entered to transcripts as P’s. Scholars who have earned letter grades of A, B, or C can submit a google form to request that their grade be entered as a P. After the form has been received the scholar’s school counselor will reach out to the scholar to set up a time for this request to be discussed.
PLEASE SUBMIT THE GOOGLE FORM BY JUNE 7th at NOON.
Here are some things that scholars should take into consideration prior to making these requests. P’s do not impact the grade point average of a scholar. However, letter grades give more information on a transcript than P’s do. If a scholar is aiming for selective post secondary institutions, those schools may prefer to see strong letter grades (A’s and B’s). Post secondary institutions may not want to see a pattern of P’s. We encourage you to do the best you can and to use this option sparingly.
All post secondary institutions know grades earned during the 2020-2021 academic year were earned during the time of a global pandemic. We anticipate many post secondary institutions will be understanding of our practice. We do not expect that a small number of P’s on a transcript would negatively impact a scholar's chances for admission. However, we recommend each scholar reach out to the admissions offices at the respective post secondary institutions, to ask how they will view P grades on transcripts.
After the School Counselor and the scholar have discussed, requests will be processed.
For our scholars who would like to meet NCAA requirements:
The following is a statement from the NCAA as it relates to scholar athletes interested in playing Division 1 or 2 sports:
For courses completed with a “pass” grade, the Eligibility Center will apply the credit earned in those courses toward the core-course requirement. If the core GPA would increase by assigning a value of 2.3, that value will be assigned to passed courses. If the 2.3 mark would decrease the scholar’s overall GPA, the core-course GPA will be calculated based only on courses with assigned letter grades from other terms. This policy will apply to scholars from all grade levels who successfully complete NCAA-approved pass/fail core courses in 2020-21.
End of Year Medication Reminder:
