Charlie Gordon

By: Mia Castillo

Before the Operation

Before the operation Charlie was superstitious. He believed that his rabbits foot, lucky penny, and horse shoe would give him a good outcome. He hoped that he would become smarter by the operation working. He also got nervous that a black cat crossed right in front of him. He knew that when that happens it means bad luck. Dr. Nemur told him not to be so superstitious. “I hope I have luck. I got my rabits foot and my lucky penny and my horse shoe. Only a black cat crossed me when I was coming to the hospital (Keyes 37).

The next trait he had was he was motivated. He had such a crave to be smart. “Miss Kinnian says maybe they can make me smart. I want to be smart” (Keyes 33). He wants to be smart like everyone else. His teacher, Miss Kinnian is telling him that with the scientific experiment maybe they could make Charlie smart like he wants to be.

After the Operation

Charlie finally got his wish and became smarter from doing the operation because it worked. It showed because he got better at spelling, punctuation, reading, and writing. “I know punctuation and I can spell good. I like to look up all the hard words in the dictionary and I remember them. I’m reading a lot now, and Miss Kinnian says I read very fast,” (Keyes 44).

Another way Charlie changed after the operation was he finally realized things he didn't k ow before. “I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me. Now I know what it means when they say “to pull a Charlie Gordon” I’m ashamed” (Keyes 44). Charlie finally realized that his “friends” were never really his friends. They just talked to him to make fun of him. Since Charlie wasn’t very smart they used his name for whenever someone made a mistake.

Why is Charlie Considered a Dynamic Character?

In the beginning Charlie is motivated/unintelligent. Throughout the story Charlie tries so hard to be smart and after the operation he becomes overly smart. He is happy but he then sees Algernon dies and he gets upset and thinks that since Algernon died he is going to die so he becomes sad and starts to remember his parents. He decides to leave town because after the operation wore off he didn't want everyone to see him become that way again so they could take advantage of him.

What was the Author's Message?

The author was showing how poorly society treats disabled people. Charlie finally got a chance to be smart and after it wore off he got tired of people using him.
