Rawson's Hybrid Chronicles
Rawson Elementary School's Interim Newsletter
Edition #3: Cohort Grouping and Instructional Schedules
Welcome to our Rawson Hybrid Chronicles, Edition #3. This Chronicle is dedicated to sharing information regarding our cohort groups for hybrid learning. Please keep in mind we have several cohorts operating during this time:
- students enrolled in the virtual academy
- students enrolled in cohort A
- student enrolled in cohort B
Please note, the following information does not pertain to students enrolled in our SDSM Virtual Academy. Information regarding the Virtual Academy will be shared under a separate communication and be shared directly with families enrolled in the academy.
For those enrolled in our hybrid programming, you will receive information from our school district regarding your child's cohort assignment on Thursday, October 1st via email as well as by the end of this week via USPS mail. Please watch your inbox and mailbox.
Based on this assignment, you can expect your child to be in school for in person instruction based on the following schedule - please note your child's schedule is based on their cohort assignment.
So, what can our Wolves expect on these "at school" and "asynchronous" days?
On in person, at school days, students will follow a daily schedule similar to our normal school year. They will engage in teaching and learning with their classroom teachers, enjoy lunch and recess activities, and proceed through the school day similarly to how we have traditionally conducted school. With increased safety and mitigation measures of course! Please watch for updates to the individual classroom daily schedule for in person, at school days to come from your child's teacher. Our in person, at school school days will run from 8:30 - 2:30 Monday through Thursday.
On asynchronous days, you can expect that students will have independent work that can be completed outside of school at your convenience. These activities will be related to and support our SDSM curriculum as well as linked to much of what classroom teachers and special education teachers are teaching and working on with students during their in person, at school days. In addition to the asynchronous work, students will also take part in virtual lessons in the areas of Art, Music, Physical Education and Library. This schedule is currently under development and will be shared with families well in advance of October 12.
Please note the schedule for asynchronous days is determined by cohort however, every student will be engaged in asynchronous learning on Fridays.
Chromebooks:
A big part of teaching and learning, in person as well as asynchronously, involves technology use. A vast majority of our families have been issued a district-owned Chromebook for use with school activities. These Chromebooks will continue to be needed on in person, at school learning days as well as asynchronous, at home learning days. What this will require is transportation of the Chromebook between home and school. To aide in this transportation, the district will be issuing every student a carrying case that is specifically designed for use with Chromebooks.
As you may be aware, there is a shortage of school appropriate devices nationwide. We have experienced this first hand in ordering of additional devices which are now on backorder. That being said, the care taken to ensure your child's Chromebook is extremely important as we move into the hybrid learning model. Please practice device safety and work with your children to ensure safe practices when transporting and using their device.
If you are interested in purchasing the district's Chromebook insurance, you can do so in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal under "Fees". The cost of the insurance is $25.
As a reminder, the Rawson Hybrid Chronicles is a five-part newsletter dedicated specifically to sharing important information with regard to our upcoming return to school in a hybrid format. The Chronicles will be released periodically over the next week and a half and are designed to provide you with bite-size, easily digestible information regarding our return to school. This format is being used as there is much information to share with our Rawson families with regard to school safety and what hybrid learning will look like moving forward. We are hopeful that you find these Chronicles informative as we inch closer to welcoming our Wolves back to our school building!
