Dear Cummington Residents,
We are happy to report that almost all of the infrastructure construction has been completed. All of the strand and fiber cables are up, all of the msts (connectors) have been placed. There is still splicing to be completed, and lots of testing. The first FSA (field service area) to be completed is FSA 03. It has been released from the contractor, TriWire, to Whip City for the next phase of testing. As we noted last time, this OPM testing will take a couple of weeks and then the installation process can begin. Our hope was to have this done a few weeks back, but, it is done now and the good news is that all of the other construction is actually a bit ahead of schedule, so all of the various sections of town should be falling into line for testing soon.
The hub is outfitted, all the panels are in. MBI moved the middle mile fibers at the Berkshire Trail building last week. The cards, and all the active components will be installed into the OLT (Optical Line Terminal) at the hub this coming week. These connect the customer to the network and are used for the conversion between the electrical signals used by the service provider's equipment and the fiber optic signals used by the passive optical network.
What about underground connections? If you are in FSA 03, you should have gotten or will soon get, a phone call from Westfield Gas and Electric for a consult. All other FSAs will soon follow. These are critical and must be done before the underground connections can be done.
What's next?
Crews continue to work on splicing and testing. The active components are being installed in the hub. The customer service reps are contacting all the underground connection customers for consults. FSA 03 is going through the final testing before the installations can begin. All the other FSAs are on track.
What's the POD for?
You may have noticed that we now have a storage pod parked at the Berkshire Trail Building. This is for all of the installation materials. All of the drops are mapped out and all of the installation material is premeasured. As each installation is scheduled, these materials are carefully checked out of the the pod to ensure that materials are properly distributed.
We post where the crews will be every day on the main page of the town website under Recent News, as well as on both Facebook and Twitter.
