Superintendent's Report

December 16, 2019

From the Desk of Dr. Steve Yanni...

Board of School Directors - This is the first Legislative meeting for some of our Board colleagues. We welcome back to Dr. Art Levinowitz to the Board and also welcome new members including Dr. Darlene Davis, Mr. Michael Henderson, Ms. Jennifer Iannitti, and Mr. Jeff Wallack.

Academic Recognition - This evening we will honor our District's National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists and Commended Students. High School students who meet published program entry and participation requirements enter the National Merit® Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) at the specified time in the high school program, usually as juniors. Each year's PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test designated for entry to a particular year's competition.

Donation - On the agenda this evening is a recommendation to accept a donation from Ms. Jill Feldman in recognition of her husband, Mr. Ronald Feldman. The donation of $49,734.12, which comes from funds remaining from the Greenfield Youth Film Festival over the past few years, will be used to upgrade the UDHS Forum Room. Outside of the Forum Room a plaque will be installed, and it will say: "This plaque honors the memory of Ron Feldman and recognizes his many years of extraordinary generosity to the Upper Dublin School District through the Greenfield Foundation." Ron's dedication to our schools spanned more than 18 years with donations totaling more than $1 million. His impact can be felt all around the District, highlighted by the Greenfield Production Studio, the Performing Arts Center, and the Forum Room at Upper Dublin High School. Ron's commitment to the students of Upper Dublin will never be forgotten.

A Fond Farewell - Last week Ms. Michelle Clegg, Director of Pupil Services, said farewell to UDSD. We will miss Michelle but know that her impact will be felt for some time. We are currently in the process of identifying candidates to fill the special education vacancy.

Welcome Aboard - Today we welcomed Ms. Megan Candido to Upper Dublin. Megan will serve UDSD as our Assistant Director of Human Resources, replacing Ms. Virginia Fredericksen. Megan has human resources experience, having served at the district-level, the Intermediate Unit level, and at the collegiate level.

Act 1 Opt-Out Resolution - The Act 1 Opt-Out Resolution is on the agenda for approval this evening. The resolution limits UDSD to a tax increase no higher than the Act 1 Index, which is 2.6%. Our budget work continues - and will continue for several months. We will have much more information to share as the school year progresses.

Meetings of the Board - Moving forward, we will have the following meeting structure:

  • Education Committee and Policy Committee meetings will be held on the same evening. These meetings will typically be held on the first Wednesday evening of the month.
  • Finance and Operations will combine to form the Joint Finance & Operations Committee. This meeting will typically be held on the third Wednesday of the month.
  • Legislative meetings will continue to be held on the fourth Monday of the month.

Construction Progress - Progress continues at the Sandy Run Middle School site. Footers for the classroom wing of the building are being poured, and the site changes almost daily. Please stay tuned to our Building Our Future site to stay informed about the progress being made at the construction site.
