It's not known what causes schizophrenia, but researchers believe that a combination of genetics, brain chemistry and environment contributes to development of the disorder.

delusions- false beliefs that aren't reality

hallucinations- seeing or hearing things that don't exist

extremely disorganized behavior

negative symptoms- lack the ability to function normally

Schizophrenia is a group of psychotic disorders that interfere with thinking and mental or emotional responsiveness. It is a disease of the brain. The term schizophrenia, which means "split mind," was first used in 1911 by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler to categorize patients whose thought processes and emotional responses seemed disconnected. Despite its name, the condition does not cause a split personality. Schizophrenia has an unknown cause and isn't curable but can be treated.
