CASE Institute Held at BGHS

The CASE Institute (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) took place at BGHS from June 20 - July 1. There were 15 teachers who attended from across the country, including two of our Agri-Science teachers - Mrs. Kimberly Barkman and Mr. Chris Kaufman. Attendees included two teachers from New Jersey, two from West Virginia, one from Ohio, one from Iowa, one from New York, and eight from Indiana, including Mrs. Barkman and Mr. Kaufman. The Institute started with a dinner on June 20th and concluded at noon on July 1st. The nine day, 80 hour intense training is designed to prepare teachers to teach the CASE Food Science curriculum. Beech Grove High School will be adding a food science course to the Applied Life Science program starting the fall of 2016. Approximately 60 students are enrolled in this new exciting course exploring the science of food and food preparation. This is not a cooking class, but there will be plenty of food evaluation. Thanks to a grant from DuPont/Pioneer, Mrs. Barkman and Mr. Kaufman were able to be trained in this curriculum, in addition to providing BGHS with the opportunity to purchase needed supplies for all of the CASE courses that we teach. This training was facilitated by two lead teachers; one from Texas and the other from Kentucky. Thanks, DuPont/Pioneer!

BG Students Attend IHSAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference

From Mr. Daniel . . .

"We took 14 student-athletes (myself & Mr.English) to Plainfield HS for the IHSAA student-athlete leadership conference. The goal of the conference was for the students to become better leaders for their respective schools & to demonstrate proper sportsmanship. The students watched presentations on Champions Together programs, listened to Governor Pence give a speech on his views of leadership, exchanged school t-shirts with other students, and watched a magic show, along with receiving an important message of togetherness & acceptance from the magician, & went to various breakout sessions on proper social media use, scholarships for college, teamwork in the weight room, etc.

Overall it was a great day for the group of students we brought with us and we feel they learned numerous examples of leadership that they will be able to bring back to Beech Grove."
