VALENTINE GRAMS
On Tuesday, February 7th, students can start buying Valentine grams at lunch. 2/$1 to send a sucker and a friendly note to your besties!
Also, for $5, they can sign up to send a Singing Valentine on Valentine’s Day to a special someone! For $1 more, you can also send a special treat with that lovely song!
LEADERSHIP CLASS
BLACK HISTORY MONTH MUSEUM
After reading Chris Crowe’s Getting Away with Murder: The True Story of the Emmett Till Case, Mrs. Thompson’s students chose one picture from the civil rights movement then researched the people and events featured. Using the informational text structures they learned in the previous unit, students created museum placards to showcase their findings. In honor of Black History Month, their incredible writing will be on display in the library the entire month of February. We invite students, parents, teachers, and community members to stop by and scan the QR codes in order to learn more about this pivotal time in our nation’s history.
STEM CLUB
Last week was our very first meeting of the Spanish Fork Junior High STEM club.
The STEM club meets one week a month.
We will have our activity on a Wednesday AND on Friday to make it easier to work with your schedule!
If you would like a reminder email that it is STEM club week, sign up here: https://forms.gle/AzvWFNhyfMgsnfxGA
Our next meeting will be on Feb. 22nd and Feb 24th and we will be making bristlebots!
We had a blast with marble art and an electromagnetic kit.
We started with a marbling art kit. We added a chemical to our water and then dropped some paint into the mixture. Using combs and pipettes we made some unexpected vibrant and green designs. So much green.
HONOR BAND
This weekend several of our band students participated in the Nebo District Honor Band. Students were nominated based on factors such as exemplary behavior, hard work, and superior musical achievement. It was incredibly competitive to be selected as a nominee.
The Nebo District Honor Band is made up of junior high students from all over the district. Selected students met together for the first time last Friday with one goal in mind: to put together an entire concert in just one day of rehearsal! Students rehearsed from 8:30-3:30 under the conducting of Dr. Shawn Smith, the Wind Ensemble Director at Brigham Young University. Students also participated in clinics specific to their instrument taught by professional musicians and local experts.
On Saturday afternoon, students pulled off a very successful performance at Spanish Fork High School. We are so proud of our participating students:
Felicity Snyder, Mary Evans, Preston Southam, Spencer Oliverson, Aarrow Miner, Bryanda Graciano-Nunez, Leo Gonzales, Brennan Pierce, Porter Anderson, Jason Petersen, Aaron Clegg, Braydon Goode, Bryce Deveraux, Addisyn Bawden, Clement Barney, Ajax Blau, and Everett Boyd.
8TH GRADE MATH
Hi Math Lobo’s and Families,
Spanish Fork Junior High can bring 10 8th graders to compete at an official MATHCOUNTS competition at BYU on Feb. 5th. Here is a tentative breakdown of the schedule.
· 8:00 - 8:30 Registration – in the Wilkinson Student Center
· 8:30 – 9:30 Sprint Round
· 9:40 – 10:20 Target Round
· 10:30 – 11:00 Team Round
· 11:00 – 12:00 Lunch / Finish Grading
· 12:00 – 1:00 Countdown and Awards – Families welcome
We need to send in our names by Thursday January 26th. Please reach out to Ms. Whiteside
(charlotte.whiteside@nebo.edu) or attend math club in room 8 on Thursday right after school to let us know if you would like to compete. This is a great opportunity for students to engage in mathematics and get some competition experience. In previous years, students were given swag bags, including a BYU t-shirt, and light refreshments at the beginning and then a bag lunch. It was a lot of fun. I highly recommend joining us.
Students will need to provide their own ride to the event. However, Ms. Whiteside will be at the competition to coach, supervise, and cheer on the teams. She will wait with each student until their ride arrives.
We are super excited to be able to provide this opportunity for our students. Let us know if you would like to attend!
SHETECH
Attention Lobo 9th Grade girls! We still have about 35 spots available for She-TECH.
What is She-TECH?
This is a day long event at the Expo center in Sandy, Utah. This year it will be on Feb. 28th. More than 3,000 girls will be in attendance from all over the state of Utah where they will connect directly with female mentors and role models in Utah’s tech industry. When you reserve your student seat to attend you’ll be matched with hands-on workshops hosted by real tech companies and brands you love. Throughout the day, girls will explore career pathways and programs with universities from across the state of Utah, compete to win prizes in a TechChallenge that helps students apply technology to collaborate and problem solve on real-world issues, and so much more. Lunch will be provided–all free of cost!
Curious about what it looked like last year?
In 2022, we welcomed nearly 2000 students to SheTech Explorer Day back from the pandemic, and it was great to be back in person!
The buses came, the students flooded in, and we had an awesome day with everyone at SheTech Explorer day at Mountain American Expo center last March. Governor Cox joined the Women Tech Council and welcomed students from more than 150 schools across the state. Students attended sessions hosted by tech and STEM industry partners, enjoying hands-on activities in programming, engineering, robotics, biomedicine, web development, UI/UX, gaming and Esports, VR, and more. There was much to explore in the TechZone, from 360 photo technology to aerospace programs, the tech in soft drink distribution, museums, aquariums, and careers across local and worldwide software companies. Schools from around the state came to show off ways their programs help students create and innovate, and everyone learned how tech is involved in everything we interact with and enjoy.
With the help of industry mentors, volunteers, and our SheTech Student Board members, girls in grades 9-12 worked in teams to compete for prizes in the TechChallenge competition. We celebrated our SheTech graduating seniors and even awarded some scholarships! It was great to be back in person this year and we want to see you next year. Talk to your teachers, parents, and bring your friends to SheTech. You won’t want to miss the fun in store all year long!
If you want to attend…
Ask your math teacher for a permission slip and return it ASAP. The spots are available on a first come, first serve basis.
College and Career Night
