400 Meter Dash
Run to Live. Live to Run: Almira R
Introduction
The 400-meter dash has been part of the Olympic Games since the start of the modern games in 1896. The distance is roughly one-fourth of a mile, or one lap around a modern track. When runners compete in the 400-meter dash, they are staggered in lanes, and must stay in the same lane throughout the race. The 400-meter run is the longest track and field event still classified as a sprint. In reality, no athlete can sprint full speed for 400 meters, so the successful 400-meter runner must combine speed with endurance. The current olympic record holder for the 400m mens sprint is Michael Johnson of the US for 43.49 sec, and for the 400m women's sprint we have Marie José Pérec of FRA for 48.25 seconds.
