Camp Wolverine
We had a wonderful time at Camp Wolverine. The kids were so well behaved and did everything from zip lining to cross country skiing and snowshoeing. I want to thank all you parents for helping make it possible by packing bags and getting students ready. I know some of the students were apprehensive about a night away, but it all turned out great. It's such a wonderful experience for the students. I also want to thank all our parent chaperones who gave up a good night's sleep to help us out! Thank you, Mrs. Dickson, Mrs. Meier, Mrs. Keller, Mrs. Swadling, Mr. Davis, Mr. Radle, Mr. Krasiejko, and Mrs. Chamberlin for being such a huge help at camp, we truly we couldn't have done it without you!!
Language Arts
- February Reading Challenge: Students are working on reading another four books by Feb. 14. Our reward is a sledding party at Kiwanis. Students need to read three books on Raz-Kids, two chapter books, and one non-fiction book. I checked in on their progress this week. Students should have at least two books done at this point and be working on their third. http://ow.ly/27yC3078OZ5
- Reading: We are reading a historical fiction story about the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and our focus is on sequence of events in a story.
- Writing: We are working on the outline for our persuasive essay. We also started on introductions and the first body paragraph.
- Grammar: We reviewed possessive nouns.
Math
Last week students continued to solve division problems with remainders, and they worked on interpreting remainders in word problems (very challenging!!). This week students learned how to use basic facts and place value to divide numbers through thousands by whole numbers through 10 (i.e. 35,000 divided by 7). They also learned how to use the Distributive Property to find quotients (also very challenging!!). While many of the students are finding division to be quite challenging, those who know their multiplication facts inside and out are having an easier time than those who are not yet proficient with their facts. Keep practicing!
Social Studies
We have been studying population density in the Northeast. Students learned a little bit about what the population density is like in the Northeast compared to the West by simulating land area and population using desks and students. Many were surprised at the difference! We read and took notes about the differences between life in a megalopolis and life in a small Northeastern town. We started learning about life in the Southwest region.
