Weeks of February 20, 2019 and February 25, 2019
- As readers, we learned about how to read more fluently and accurately. We learned that good readers stop and monitor to their reading.
- We also learned that with longer books, we should make bigger scoops in our sentence. We focused on looking for various forms of punctuation to help guide our reading fluency.
- Also, we learned that good readers often change their voices to fit the characters. We listened to the Online Story of Strega Nona to hear how Tomie dePaola reads the book with various voices.
- To help learn more about these reading skills, we read and discussed stories such as Class Picture Day, The King Who Reigned, Poppleton, and Happy Like Soccer.
- As part of our Reading focus and strategies, we learned about figurative language. We focused on alliteration, idioms, and similes. We discovered that writers add these extra touches to make their stories more interesting to read
- We viewed a Brain Pop Jr. and Brain Pop lesson on similes and idioms.
- As readers, we also learned about folktales. Folktales are stories that have been told for many many years and are usually about explaining a part of something in nature or teaching a lesson.
- We read and discussed How Chipmunk Got His Stripes. The story explained how chipmunk was actually a brown squirrel and after having a dispute with a brown bear about whether the sun would come up or not, brown bear scratched squirrel. When squirrel's scratches healed, he was left with white stripes.
- To help reinforce our skills with idioms and reading comprehension for How Chipmunk Got His Stripes, we played Kahoot!
- To help grow our knowledge about diversity and stereotypes, we listened to a read aloud called Pink Is for Boys by Robb Pearlman. The children loved the story and we had a great discussion about accepting all people and appreciating each other's differences.
Writers' Workshop~
- During Writers' Workshop we started our next Lucy Calkin's' Unit ~ Opinion Writing. We are the importance of not only stating our Opinion, but including reasons and evidence of why we formed our opinion.
- First, we read and discussed Mercy Watson to the Rescue. We wrote and Opinion Letter as a class stating the opinion that, "Mercy Watson is Hilarious!" Then we added the reasons why we thought Mercy Watson was hilarious.
- To start off the writing unit, we wrote letters to our 4L Buddies about our favorite books. The first letter we wrote was our opinion about our favorite character from our favorite book. Then, we wrote a letter about our favorite part in our favorite book.
- During Grammar, we learned about adverbs. Adverbs describe a verb. They tell how, when, where, and why about an action.
Mathematicians~
- We learned more about collecting data, then creating and reading graphs.
- As mathematicians, we learned how to solve two-step number stories. We learned how t use the CUBES method ~ Circle the numbers, Underline the question, Box important words, Evaluate the problem, and Solve! We also used various diagrams ( Part-Part- Total, Quantity-Quantity- Difference, and The Change Diagram) and math strategies to find the correct solution to the problem.
- We also started to learn how to add two-digit by two-digit numbers using partial sums.
Science~
- As geologists, we learned more about River Rocks. We experimented with separating river rocks using various screens. We discovered that depending on the size of the wholes in the screens, we are able to separate smaller and larger sized rocks.
- We discovered that river rocks include small and large sized gravel, small and large sized pebbles, and sand.
Social Studies~
- During Social Studies, we learned more about President's Day. We specifically focused on learning more about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. After watching a Brain Pop, reading and playing a Scholastic News magazine about Abraham Lincoln, creating booklets about each president, we made an interactive Booklet all about both presidents.
- We read and discussed a Scholastic News about Abraham Lincoln.
Other Activities~
- February 20, 2019 marked our 100th Day of School. As part of our celebration, we responded to a writing prompt, "When I am 100 Year Old," and then we made a portrait of ourselves when we are 100 years old. Be sure to check out our completed projects below!
