Advanced/AP/IB Procedures
Advanced, AP, and IB courses are designed to prepare students for success on specific course assessments which can result in college credit, or to prepare a student for such a course in the future. Due to the challenging nature of Advanced, AP, and IB courses, students may find themselves struggling more than expected and may potentially risk losing high school credit.
In order to ensure a student has an opportunity to gain credit for the specific course, if a student earns a failing (below 70) Fall Semester Average in an Advanced, AP or IB course, the student will be placed in an on-level course at the Spring Semester to provide an opportunity to gain credit towards graduation. If the class in question is an AP or IB course, the student will be ineligible to sit for the associated exam in that subject area.
Magnolia High School Named to Advanced Placement School Honor Roll
April Gonzales
College Board announced that Magnolia High School has been named to the Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning silver distinction.
The AP® School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.
Magnolia High had 61% of seniors taking at least one AP exam during high school, 42% scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam, and 20% taking five or more AP exams!
Magnolia High offers 21 AP courses ranging from English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, and Fine Arts. Of the students at the campus, 686 students took at least one AP exam of the 1164 exams given. The campus has 82 AP Scholars, 34 AP Scholars with Honors, and 53 AP Scholars with Distinction.
“This is an awesome recognition for the hard work our advanced teachers have been putting in with our AP students. It takes dedication from our teachers, counselors, and parents to make AP a priority and a success for our students. Our MHS administration could not be prouder of this accomplishment,” said Principal Greg Quinn.
Magnolia High is being further recognized with the AP Access Award, which honors schools that encourage more low-income and underrepresented minority students to take AP courses. The percentage of students in at least one of these categories who took at least one AP Exam before graduation is proportional to or above your school's student population, demonstrating a clear and effective commitment to equitable access to advanced coursework. Research shows students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time. And even for those who don't earn college credit, advanced coursework provides early exposure to college-level work and contributes to a college-going school culture.
“AP represents an opportunity for students to stand out to colleges, earn college credit and placement, and potentially boost their grade point averages,” said Trevor Packer, head of the AP program. “The schools have shown that they can expand access to these college-level courses and still drive high performance – they represent the best of our AP program.”
College Board’s Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond.
