The Cloud Connection
Sept. 30, 2013
Math: We'll review chapter 2 in class on Monday, take the quiz on Tues. and launch into multiplication on Wed. Homework: Mon. pg. 122-124, Tues. prob. solving sheet, Wed. pg. 139-140, Thurs. pg. 145-146.
Reading: We are learning about plot and theme as we're reading books by Patricia Polacco. I'm hoping to be finished with this unit by Thursday. We'll start a biography unit when we've finished reading our Patricia Polacco books.
Language: This week we'll create a planning chart using Write Tools framework to guide us in our informational writing. Students are working on two pieces of writing they'll take to a final draft; their insect mini-investigation and a narrative piece from their notebook. The class' spelling words are on spelling city. They cover the long e and short e sound spelled 'ea' this week. We'll have a test on Fri. Next week we'll work on our next four Greek/Latin root words. The words are:
instead ahead please health ready meal eager feast weather
steady bread lead already repeat spread least feather measles
breakfast pleasant
Science: We're continuing our study of insects this week. Students will be trying to complete their insect mini investigation by Friday. This work will be done in class so unless students aren't using their time wisely they shouldn't have homework associated with this project. We'll be hiking on our trail to learn a bit more about plant identification. We had a great time at the Wynn Nature Center learning about the FBI.
Social Studies: We'll practice finding the longitude and latitude of places this week using our atlases.
Other items: I hope students are busy reading for their first book report. I would suggest that students finish up the book they're reading for their report this week so they have plenty of time to complete the poster before the 10th. See the note below about requirements. I am happy to send home contstruction paper if students need paper for their poster.
I still have a few families that need to pay the craft/magazine fee. If you haven't done so please try to get that turned in soon. The magazines are already starting to arrive. Thank you.
Student Council Elections are Tues. We have the most candidates running from our room. Good luck to all of them!
The class did a great job in my absence, thank you for raising such wonderful children. We enjoyed our p.j. /root beer float / movie party on Friday. Thank you to Heidi Johnson for bringing in pumpkin muffins!
I'm sending home progress reports Monday. Students may redo most anything on the list, or turn assignments in that are late. Feel free to give me a call if you aren't sure about an assignment. The end of the Quarter is Oct. 17th so all work needs to be completed before the 17th.
Book Report Assignment
Your poster book report is due Oct. 10. Your book needs to be 100 pages or more written at your reading level. The poster needs to include the title, and author of your book as well as your name. In addition to the artistic quality of your poster you will need to include a written summary of your book. This does not have to be typed and it doesn’t have to be attached to your poster but you will need to turn it in. You will use it to share your book with the class so it needs to include the characters, setting, and main plot of the book. Do not include the ending of the book; your job is to encourage others to read the book. If you didn’t like the book you might suggest what type of reader might like the book. Remember to use your writing rubric so your written summary is filled with language that helps us understand your thoughts about your book.
PTO Fundraiser
If you forgot to return your packet for the PTO fundraiser on Fri. we really need them turned in by Monday, Sept. 30 so the orders can be submitted. Thank you for your continued support.

Student Council Elections and Speeches
Candidates running for WHE student council will be delivering their speeches around 9:40 Tues. morning with voting to follow during students' lunch hour. We have a classroom of hopeful candidates and all would make great student council members. I'm proud of them wanting to be a part of this process, even though we'll only end up with one representative. There are bound to be a few disappointed students after results are announced on Tues. We appreciate all of your support throughout this process.
