Notes from the Principal
We know that our mindset matters; if we think we can do something, we have more persistence and are able to work through it. If we think we can't, often, we don't even try.
Growing up, I was always one math course behind many of my peers. It led me to think and say, "I'm just not a math person." It wasn't until a course in college in which I did well that I realized that I might be a math person after all. And teaching, I fell in love with math. It's so much fun...and it's everywhere!
How can you encourage your child's math mindset?
Do
- Approach problems like a puzzle.
- Ask, "What do we know?" "What could we try?"
- Engage in silly addition/subtraction mental games. What's 5+5? 10 + 10? 20 + 20? Let the see you sweat as you work to figure out answers with bigger numbers. It's important to know that math can take work.
Don't
- Try not to say, "I don't know--I wasn't good at math."
- "I'm not good at math."
This year, we had our first Math Olympiad team at Edgewood. Math Olympiad is a national contest for 4th and 5th graders with very rigorous, multi-step problems. While our inaugural team didn't win any national titles, our contest average went up substantially. Both the students and I learned to enjoy flexing our problem-solving muscles on Fridays. There are few things more satisfying than figuring out a tough problem, and math is ripe with opportunities!

We used this guide to learn more about what it is and how to talk with kids about it. If your child has talked about it, we encourage you to take a look. And if they haven't, it's a good thing to be aware of as a parent.
