Bristol Township School District
May 2022
Message from the Superintendent
With the end of the school year almost here, we have many celebrations ahead. From the district art show and concerts to prom and graduation, there is so much success and talent to recognize among our students. It feels wonderful to have these traditions return and be together in person again. Families, please join us in commemorating your children at these events. I look forward to seeing you all.
- Dr. Melanie Gehrens, Superintendent of Schools

- The district-wide art show will resume in-person on May 18 and 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Truman High School. The community is invited to see a wide variety of K-12 student artwork including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and crafts.
- Truman High School’s “Just One Life Program” featuring a mock car crash was back for the first time since 2019. The chilling two-day event, April 28 and 29, drew attention to the far-reaching emotional and physical damage caused by distracted and drunk driving.
- Girls wrestling, the fastest growing high school sport in the country, will be added to Truman High School next school year, pending School Board approval in June. If they are the next PIAA school to add girls wrestling, they would be 37th PIAA school and the first in Bucks County.
Truman High School’s drama department is yet again making history as the first high school in the world and theatre in the state to pilot the Broadway show, “The Prom.”

FDR Uses TKF’s Restorative Workshop to Teach Peace
Franklin D. Roosevelt Middle School has been partnering with the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF) to teach restorative practices that include managing emotions, practicing mindfulness, making amends and forgiveness, building supportive relationships, practicing conflict resolution, and how to become a peacemaker.
The TKF Restorative Workshop is a ten-session curriculum series that sixth grade students participated in once a week for ten weeks in their social studies classes. Seventh grade students participated in the lessons in their health class. The curriculum was designed to meet instructional educational standards for character building, social competency, healthy decision making and personal safety. In 6th grade, the sessions were co-taught by school social worker Dr. Meredith Leach and teacher Heather Foster, and school counselor Shana Almeida and teacher Kristin Retallick. In 7th grade, health teacher Jaclyn Strapple collaborated with the school social worker and school counselor to deliver the lessons.
Lessons focus on implementing positive behaviors, being mindful, connecting actions and feelings, and using restorative methods and vocabulary.
“The lessons support social emotional learning by using vocabulary that is helpful for mindfulness and managing emotions,” said Foster. “By using situations students can relate to and practicing the vocabulary, they feel comfortable and secure expressing themselves. They start sharing stories, realize they are not alone in their experiences, and show compassion to each other.”

Armstrong wins 'What's so cool about manufacturing?' contest
Neil A. Armstrong students won the Outstanding Overall Achievement Award at the Philadelphia Regional Awards for What’s So Cool About Manufacturing! This award is the highest honor to receive and given to the team that creates a video that “displays the highest technical, visual and storytelling achievement.”
The five-member team consisting of Nilufer Bektas, Andrew Karaskevicus, Audrey McGeachy, Emir Ozturk and Leah Ramrata will be moving on to the statewide competition in Harrisburg on May 18 to represent the Philadelphia region.
To put together their winning video, students visited local manufacturer Lampire Biological Laboratories in December to interview employees and shoot video footage of the site. From there, the team spent three months combing through their footage and produced a 2 ½ minute video for the contest.
