A message from our school counselor, Ms. Andrea
The first idea the child must acquire is that of the difference between good and evil.
Maria Montessori
Creating a moral identity is one of the most important tasks of childhood development. Moral identity does not develop on its own, but is highly impacted by the influence of parents and teachers. As I traveled in Rwanda this summer and studied the causes and consequences of genocide, I learned of many situations where individuals stood up against terrifying circumstances and powerful leaders to save and protect the innocent. This phenomenon was also repeatedly documented during the Holocaust and other crises. Sam and Pearl Oliner, a husband and wife team, spent thirty years researching “rescuers” people who saved the lives of Jewish people during the Holocaust. They found rescuers had high empathy, strong self-efficacy, and a deeply internalized sense of themselves as caring people with a responsibility to others and their community. Many of these rescuers attributed these characteristics to the values and teachings of their parents. So here are some ideas to help children develop a moral identity.
Share your beliefs- share your values and the “why” behind what you believe
Be a role model- Children internalize the behaviors they see and experience with you on a daily basis.
Hold family debates - this gives your child the opportunity to practice defending their beliefs and helps them think about their own values.
Develop your “best possible self”- Laura King, a professor at University of Missouri-Columbia, had study participants write short descriptions of their “best possible selves” each day and found that this practice led to increases in optimism and self-efficacy. You can ask your children at dinner or before bed “What did you do today that was your best possible self?” “What can you do tomorrow to be your “best possible self”?
Make a virtue scrapbook - work together to identify who your child is and who they want to be
Write a birthday letter - focus on character and caring, and tell your kids why you value them
Capture caring moments - take pictures of your kids being kind and display them in your home to give the message that you value caring behavior.

The junior high is putting on a madrigal dinner theatre and is looking for parents to help with cooking and donating ingredients for the play. This can be documented for volunteer hours in Track it Forward.
The play is on the 12th and 13th of December. Ticket sales have ended. Doors open at 5:00pm and the dinner starts at 5:30. During the play, audience members enjoy a three course dinner with the King and Queen and join them for a play and music.
The food includes: wassail, salad, potato ham chowder, brownies, and ice cream. We will also have chicken nuggets, fries, and veggies for kids who prefer this. Here is the link to the chowder recipe – https://www.cookingclassy.com/creamy-ham-potato-corn-chowder/
