Discovering the Germantown Online Academy of Learning (GOAL): A Premier Virtual School Experience
In August 2021, the Germantown Municipal School District unveiled its virtual school - the Germantown Online Academy of Learning (GOAL). This online academy is reshaping K-12 education in Shelby County, Tennessee, providing families with a tuition-free alternative that blends the best of virtual learning with real-world experiences.
The GOAL Experience: At GOAL, the typical day in the life of a student is a unique blend of online coursework, interactive learning, and community engagement. While most of the learning happens asynchronously, there are ample opportunities for synchronous interactions and real-world experiences that enrich the educational journey.
Online Learning Excellence: GOAL's students have access to high-quality online learning resources through the Pearson Connexus Platform. This platform is designed to provide a comprehensive and interactive curriculum that caters to the needs of students across grade levels using Tennessee State Standards. Despite the predominantly online format, GOAL recognizes the importance of live, interactive instruction. Students have opportunities to engage in synchronous learning sessions, fostering a sense of community and teacher-student interaction.
Field Trips: GOAL goes beyond the virtual world by organizing field trips that allow students to explore the local community. These excursions provide a hands-on learning experience, bridging the gap between the digital classroom and the real world. They also host regular virtual sessions aimed at bringing local personalities in to speak on servant leadership and community service.
Social Events: One of the highlights of the GOAL experience is its commitment to creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie among students. The recent ice cream social event was ample fun, offering a casual way for students to come together, share experiences, and build friendships.
The Germantown Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) is more than just an online school; it's a dynamic educational community that is redefining the virtual learning experience. With a blend of top-notch online resources, real-world experiences, and a commitment to fostering student engagement, GOAL is setting the standard for virtual education in Shelby County, Tennessee.
If you're looking for an alternative education experience that combines the flexibility of online learning with the benefits of a close-knit community, GOAL might just be the perfect fit for your family. Or, if you know a family, spread the word. Explore the world of GOAL today and embark on a journey of academic excellence and personal growth. Join us as we scream for ice cream, and so much more, at GOAL! Go behind the scenes with our Communications Interns to hear from some GOAL students on our Instagram Page.
Promoting Mental Health Awareness During National Suicide Prevention Week
As we step into September, we want to bring your attention to an important issue that affects our community and our nation. September is National Suicide Awareness Month, and from September 10th to 16th, we observe National Suicide Prevention Week in 2023.
National and Local Resources: During National Suicide Awareness Month, it's essential to have access to resources that can make a difference. We've compiled a list of national resources and local resources that can provide valuable information and assistance. These organizations are dedicated to promoting mental health and preventing suicide, and we encourage you to explore the support they offer:
Dial 988 for a Suicide & Crisis Hotline
GMSD's Important Partnership with Parents: One of the ways GMSD provides support for families in crisis is through the "Signs of Suicide" curriculum, referred to as "S.O.S." This curriculum is made available to families by middle school and high school counseling staff and is designed to provide parents with knowledge and tools to recognize signs of distress in their children. To assist parents in navigating this sensitive topic, we have attached a handy resource page from the SOS program. This resource equips parents with information and guidance on how to engage in conversations about mental health with their children and provides valuable insights into recognizing signs of distress.
Elementary School Parents--Are You Receiving Notifications About AR Tests?
In the age of technology, fostering a love for reading in young children can sometimes be a challenge. However, educational tools like Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader (AR) have been making a significant impact in promoting literacy among young learners.
What is AR Reading? Accelerated Reader, or AR Reading, is an innovative literacy program designed to encourage and assess students' independent reading skills. It offers a vast library of books across various genres and reading levels, allowing students to choose books that match their interests and reading abilities.
How Does AR Reading Work?
Book Selection: Students select books from the AR Reading library that pique their interest.
Reading and Comprehension: After reading a book, students take comprehension quizzes on the AR platform. These quizzes evaluate their understanding of the book's content, helping teachers assess their comprehension skills.
Feedback and Rewards: AR provides immediate feedback to students, letting them know how well they did on the quiz. This feedback is valuable in helping students track their progress. Additionally, students can earn points for successful quizzes, adding an element of gamification and motivation to the reading experience.
How Parents Can Get Involved: To support your child's literacy journey with AR Reading, we encourage parents to sign up for alerts about AR tests and early literacy assessments. These alerts provide valuable insights into your child's reading progress, helping you stay engaged in their learning.
This week's spotlight takes us behind the scenes of the yearbook room with Elise Jang
Elise Jang, a senior at Houston High School, is dedicated to her school community. She's known for her kindness both in and out of the classroom. As one of the yearbook editors, she captures the joy of her peers and strives to improve the yearbook's quality. Last year, she collaborated on a scrapbook-themed edition, a school favorite.
She mentors others students, as an active chess club member, maintaining a strong presence and helping to expand its membership to include 200 members! In the International Club, she organized a K-Pop routine for the school's International Extravaganza, promoting Korean culture.
In her volunteering efforts, Elise is a member of the Civil Air Patrol, recently earning certifications in first aid, search and rescue, and crisis communication for the US Air Force. She's a Mustang Mentor, assisting new students in adjusting to Houston High. Elise also contributes to the school's knitting and crochet club's fundraisers, like the Red Scarf Project for foster care children. Her goal is to become a doctor, and her medical training serves as preparation and a challenge for her aspirations.
Understanding Professional Learning Communities (PLCs): A Valuable Practice Used in Your Child's Education
We want to share an important aspect of your child's education that may come into play over the next couple of weeks. It's called a Professional Learning Community (PLC), and it's a valuable initiative that plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of education your child receives.
What is a PLC? A Professional Learning Community, often referred to as a PLC, is a group of content teachers who come together regularly to collaborate, share ideas, and enhance their teaching practices. These meetings typically occur outside of regular instructional hours and provide educators with a dedicated space to learn from one another.
Why PLCs Matter: PLCs are more than just meetings; they are the backbone of continuous improvement in education. Here's why they matter:
Collaboration: PLCs enable teachers to collaborate and exchange ideas, strategies, and resources. This collaboration fosters a supportive community of educators committed to enhancing student learning.
Data Analysis: During PLC meetings, teachers analyze student progress data, identifying areas where students may need additional support or enrichment. This data-driven approach ensures that instruction is tailored to the specific needs of each student.
Curriculum Development: Teachers use PLC time to design instructional units and create common assessments. This collaborative effort ensures consistency and alignment in what students are taught, promoting a coherent and effective curriculum aligned with state standards.
Expert Support: In addition to regular teachers, the district arranges for qualified substitute teachers and in-house experts to step in as instructors during the school day while teachers engage in PLC activities. This expert support helps maintain the continuity of instruction.

Mustang Scores and Schedules
Riverdale Varsity Volleyball is Stacking Up Wins this Season
Riverdale volleyball continues with their amazing season, with varsity volleyball winning 2-0 in all three of their home games last week. They played Bon Lin on Tuesday, Appling on Wednesday, and Arlington on Thursday, but having three games in a row only fueled their forward momentum. Arlington was a huge win for the Raiders! They came out ready for the fight, and the first set was an almost instant knockout, with the Raiders winning 25-7. The Tigers tried to come back in the second set, but Riverdale once again held them to a low score, winning 25-16. This weekend they had extraordinary victories over several local teams as they went on to win the Briarcrest tournament. The varsity team has continued to improve with each game, and they are now playing together with ferocity, strength, and unity. Stay on the lookout for our full coverage, which will include footage of some of the best volleys from these games.
The Raiders are on the road tomorrow night when they face Elmore Park at 4:30pm, but they are back at home this Wednesday when they play the Collierville Dragons at 5:00pm.

Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Kelly Jeu ('08)
Last Tuesday, the Honors Academy had the privilege of hosting Dr. Kelly Jeu, a 2008 Houston High School alumna, who shared her journey from high school to becoming a pediatrician. Dr. Jeu recounted that her aspiration to become a physician began as early as the second grade. During her presentation, she vividly described how her passion for medicine and her desire to make a difference in people's lives evolved during her time at Houston High School, particularly through her involvement in our Health Science program and HOSA organization.
Dr. Jeu passionately stated, "Helping people through medicine is the most fulfilling way I could serve in my career." She also shared how her career as a pediatrician allowed her to connect with young patients by sharing in their enthusiasm for dressing up for holidays and their mutual love for PokΓ©mon.
When addressing the topic of college advice, Dr. Jeu emphasized the importance of not only considering the prestige of a school but also evaluating the available academic programs and opportunities for research. She recounted her own experience attending Christian Brothers University on a scholarship, which enabled her to complete her undergraduate degree without accumulating any debt, thanks to the financial support she received.
We are grateful to Dr. Jeu for visiting with our Honors Academy and HOSA students to answer questions and provide advice to our students who are pursuing careers in the medical field.
Houston Goes to Hollywood: How You Can Help Celebrate Homecoming This Year
Houston High School is preparing to host its annual homecoming celebration, and once again this year, it's open to the entire community. With the theme "Houston Goes to Hollywood," our students are gearing up for an unforgettable on-campus experience with dress up days and the normal festivities. But that's not all β feeder schools in the district will join in the festivities with a Mustang Spirit Day on Friday, September 29th, showcasing their pride and support for Houston High School.
Furthermore, our dedicated Mustangs will return to feeder schools throughout the week for special volunteer activities, so keep an eye out for them in your carlines and beyond. Additionally, the Student Government Association (SGA) is extending a warm invitation to our younger community members with a special event on Saturday, September 23rd, from noon until 4pm on the football field. As junior vice president Kelly White put it, "We have this idea of hosting a fun, fall carnival-type atmosphere that gives us a chance to make connections with future Mustangs. We want to create a fun, community-building event that is free and enjoyable for our feeders!" So, mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details as we come together to celebrate and strengthen our Houston High School community.
Local businesses can get in on the fun also with the school's Rep the H campaign. All interested in participating are encouraged to reach out to Andrew.Martin@gmsdk12.org or Shannon.Blackburn@gmsdk12.org for more information.
