Sherwood Spirit
January 2019
From Mr. Walerstein's Desk
Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a restful holiday break with family and friends. January is a time for a fresh start and for showing perseverance. As we begin the second half of the school year, we have many activities planned for the students.
We ended last year with our amazing Sherwood musicians performing in their Winter Concert. Our Level I band and orchestra debuted and showed that all of their hard work had paid off. Additionally, our Level II band, Level II orchestra and chorus also showed off their musical talent. Their performance at MacArthur Airport was well-received, and the students sounded great.
On January 17, Sherwood Elementary School, in cooperation with Commack Road Elementary School, will welcome the Suffolk County Police Department and Officer Sabrina Pitch from the Community Relations Bureau who will do a presentation entitled "Being Police Smart" for 4th and 5th grade students and their parents/guardians. This presentation will be about appropriate use of social media and technology. You must register ahead of time for this evening event; you can do so by clicking HERE. At this event, we will also raffle off an Amazon Kindle Tablet. We hope to see you there. On January 18, Officer Pitch will visit our 2nd and 3rd grade students for an in-school presentation.
This January, we will celebrate our PTA Reflections winners; this awards ceremony will take place on January 10 at 7:00 pm in the Sherwood library. Congratulations to all our participants!
Finally, this month, to support our 7 Habits of Happy Kids initiative, we will continue our focus on Habit 3: Put First Things First. This is the habit where we teach students to prioritize. Students will begin to understand that they should do what they have to do, before they do what they want to do. Please talk with your children about the importance of staying focused, staying on task, and spending time on what is most important.
Once again, welcome back. Have a great January.
Warmest Regards,
Chad Walerstein
