NAESP - Report to Parents: The Rewards of Reading
Buckingham is celebrating the enjoyment of reading in all of our classrooms - to initiate exposure to books, the excitement of story, and the discovery of interests! This edition of Report to Parents: The Rewards of Reading focuses on the important family/school partnership for continued support with your child's reading growth. Many of our classrooms are participating in reading goals for the year - the ideas presented can assist you with establishing your "reading time" at home!
"The seeds for success in the classroom are sown at home. Encouraging children to read at home is one of the most powerful ways that parents can support students’ learning. Just 15 minutes of reading at home per day can make a difference in students’ reading fluency. Prioritize reading with these tips..."

Dear Buckingham Families,
On behalf of Buckingham Elementary School, we would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the entire school community for your participation in the Annual Holiday Turkey Toss and Gift Giving Tree Project. As in years past - through your participation and donations, we were able to purchase supermarket gift cards and presents to help support some of our Buckingham families experiencing financial hardships this holiday season. The overwhelming generosity and kindness exhibited by all is truly inspiring and also a testament to our wonderful school community.
Thank you, again, for your support and participation in these incredibly important projects. Wishing all a new year filled with good health and great joy!
Sincerely,
Nurse Randi, Mr. Rosica and Mr. Durie

Buckingham Library
Happy New Year from Mrs. Kraus and Mrs. Diodati!
Our big winter book order arrived and the students are excited to get their hands on our 84 new additions! Here's a glimpse into what each grade level is doing in library:
- First graders - Continue to review how books are organized in the “easy” section of our library by singing a song to help them remember, "The first three letters of the author's last name, yeah!"
- Second graders - Learning about the Caldecott Award, which is given to picture books for their illustrations. They were excited to find out that some familiar books were past winners, like the Polar Express. The 2017 winner will be announced at the end of January, so they all voted on their favorite nominee. We can't wait to read the winner!
- Third graders - Learn about the Dewey Decimal System and how books are organized in the nonfiction section. The ‘Melvil Dewey Rap' is always a fun way to start or end library class!
- Research caps are on starting this month for Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth graders. Fourth graders will be choosing a mammal to research, while fifth grade will be delving into the American Revolution. Sixth graders are doing their practice before their assessment later this year. All three grade levels will be communicating their findings into a PowerPoint presentation that we hope to share by year's end.
Be sure to cozy up to a good book during these cold months ahead!

School Happenings
Buckingham's 2nd Annual Engineering Expo
On Saturday, January 7, 2017, 102-Engineers participated in the Second Annual Buckingham Engineer Expo. All student projects showed enormous creativity, problem solving skills, and ingenuity. Projects ranged from snap circuits - to marble runs - to cranes that lifted different sized objects. Students proudly displayed their projects at tables located throughout the school. As visitors stopped at each table, student engineers expertly explained their projects and the improvements they made - which is a key component to the engineer design process. Thank you to all participants and Mrs. Doherty for making the event so wonderful.
Congratulations and we cannot wait for next year!
Yo-Jo Visits Buckingham for an Anti-Bullying Assembly
On Wednesday, January 11th, the students of Buckingham were treated to a special anti-bullying assembly that featured a big, blue, fuzzy friend named YoJo! The program, entitled "Bully No More," taught students what to do if they are a bully target, a witness to bullying, and even recognize when they are being a bully themselves. YoJo utilized humor and was positive and upbeat, but also delivered a very important message to our entire student body. Thank you YoJo!
