Week At A Glance
October 23-30, 2017
HSE 21 Corner
Welcome back from Fall Break! Wasn't a full week nice this year?! This week we have several times where our reflection on HSE 21 will occur. Of course, on Monday you will continue the important inquiry work in your PLC. Remember to keep posting your minutes to Canvas.
Then on Wednesday we have a staff meeting to hear more details about our partnership with Community Health counseling, Youth Mentoring Initiative of Fishers (YMI), the Lilly Counseling Grant for HSE ($2.1 million!) and, if time, a brief discussion of the two remaining pillars of HSE 21 Best Practices- Transfer of Learning (the why) and Content and Curriculum (the what). The HSE 21 graphic is at the end of this WAG.
Finally, we finish out the week with Team Meetings all day Thursday and follow-up on Friday afternoon for any unfinished fifth grade teams. We will continue to discuss progress of students, particularly our sub-groups. We can also discuss info you gained from parent conferences.
Mac to High Sierra Update
10/11
It is Technology’s recommendation to update your MacBook Air to the newest Operating System to High Sierra. Fall break would be a great time to do so!
What do I need to know ahead of time?
- It will take about 60-90 minutes to update; during this time, you will not be able to you use your MacBook Air.
- You will want to be sure your MacBook Air is plugged into a power source.
- You will be prompted for the admin username and password.
- Username: lmstaff (lowercase L)
- Password: HSEloc@1 (lowercase L)
How do I update my device?
- Close all your open programs and then click on this link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12&l=en- us&ls=1
- Click on the blue button to “View in Mac App Store”.
- Download the High Sierra installer.
- Follow the installer prompts to complete the upgrade.
- Do not close the lid; leave your MacBook open!
Can I do this at home?
- Yes, as long as you can connect to the internet to download the installer.
Why the update?
- Now that High Sierra has been released, Apple will no longer be updating the older Operating System (Sierra), thus your computer will no longer receive critical security updates if you do not update.
- Apple has identified a security vulnerability in their Sierra operating system – it has been corrected in High Sierra.
What if I do not feel comfortable updating my MacBook Air?
- Your building tech will be happy to assist you with the update. Please contact them for assistance.
When do I need to have this completed?
- Ideally, the sooner the better. We will send out a couple more reminders to those that have not updated over the next six weeks. In December, we will have the building techs work directly with those that have not updated to make sure all MacBook Airs are updated prior to Winter Break.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

10/16
I have had about a dozen staff members email me over break that were unable to log into their Macs after updating to High Sierra. It would appear for some, not all, that after updating the Mac, we need to hardwire you back on our network to login one time to allow you to login wirelessly. Apple is aware of this issue and are making updates to correct this.
If you would like to wait until after Fall Break to update, that is certainly fine. If you do happen to update your Mac and are unable to log in, your building tech will be able to assist you when you return on Monday or we can assist getting you back on here at the administration building.
TDS News
How is Lucy Calkins going? Are you ready for your next unit? Remember to use the online resources as you begin to plan. Going online allows you to visualize the entire unit. The online resources also allow you to access materials quickly.
According to the 5th grade Humanities map, it is suggested that you move to Unit 4, The Research Based Argument Essay. However, I strongly suggest that you follow the units in order. I have learned that Lucy's Writing Units build upon each other. The language and terminology she mentions in Unit 4 will not make sense to students because the other units haven't been introduced yet. Therefore, I think it is best that you start Unit 2, The Lens of History, after Fall Break.
