Career Experience that Pays $$
Mesa County Valley School District 51 has been selected by a state program, Career Wise, as a pilot for youth apprenticeships! This means that in February sophomores can apply via an online application tool to local businesses for the opportunity to train and work at their company and develop real career skills, while earning money! The apprenticeship would begin next fall, with a summer class requirement to build some social competencies needed for being successful in the workplace. The four pathways that are being targeted for this program are financial services, information technology, advanced manufacturing, and business operations.
The home school Counseling Departments will be offering information sessions at Parent/Teacher Conferences on February 2nd in the library to share details about the process, options, and commitment required to be a part of the program. See you there!
ECP
Early Childhood Professions students are busy! New students and Beginning Pathway students are working on basic child development concepts. Intermediate Pathway students are doing advanced presentations on social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-agers. Students on internships (Advanced Pathway) are doing college level course work in guidance and observation.

Our simulation baby program is a big success with the students. They are enjoying and yet are frustrated by the baby as they care for it in class and still maintain their grades.
Students who are interns will soon be going back out into their early childhood sites. This term they will be required to do some in depth evaluations and planning in addition to observations every day. Two students from this group will be chosen to go to Denver in March for the Colorado Association of the Education of Young Children’s conference. Look at Mrs. Deb’s quarterly newsletter to see the criteria for this free trip.
Sport Vehicle Repair
First mod Sport Vehicle Repair students are adding oil and gas to their brand new Brigg’s and Stratton engines. The next step will be to start them up for the first time. Students are excited to find out how their engines run. Once they are up and running they will be taking them apart and putting them back together step by step. It’s a hands on process for students to learn to diagnose issues and equips them with the knowledge they will need to get their Brigg’s and Stratton Certification.
