Spirit Week!
For the remaining days until break, Sunrise will be joining in with many other Enumclaw School District schools to participate in spirit week! We tried to make the days as easy to participate in as possible, and as always, participation is optional. The days are:
Monday 12/11: Pajama Day
Tuesday 12/12: Snowflake day (wear white/blue or clothes with snowflake design)
Wednesday 12/13: Candy Cane Day (wear white/red)
Thursday 12/14: Flannel Day
Friday 12/15: Sunrise Spirit Day (Spirit gear or blue/orange)
Monday 12/18: Holiday accessories (whatever winter holiday you celebrate!)
Tuesday 12/19: Tacky Sweater Day
Emergency Weather Information
You can view full details regarding emergency information and the decision making process when it comes to wintry weather conditions at the ESD website linked below.
Rainy Pacific Northwest Weather is Here
We want to make sure that our students get outside to play and enjoy recess, so unless it is high winds, sideways rain/wind, rainy and very cold, or a downpour, we let students go outside for recess. Please ensure your student comes to school wearing shoes and outerwear for the weather. If you need help securing these items, our counselor can connect you with resources. Teachers remind students to put coats on before recess, and students can access the lost and found if they forget a coat. Students always have the option to stay in the covered area during recess, and we have the library open as staffing allows during some of our recesses as an indoor option.

Sunrise’s Word for December ~ PERSISTENCE
Examples of persistent behavior in children
Cleans up after playing with an activity even though he/she doesn't want to.
Finishes a new puzzle even if he/she needs to ask for help.
Keeps trying when learning a new skill even though it may take longer for him/her to be successful than it does for others.
Tries something that is hard and doesn't give up (drawing, learning long division, printing neatly, making free throws, skipping, making their bed, etc).
Ways to praise your child for persistent behavior
'You really put a lot of work into that.'
'You really tried hard.’
'Good for you. You didn't give up.'
'You found that hard, but you kept trying.'
'Well done, you did that even though it was not easy or fun.'
Talk to your child about persistent thinking
I can do it (when work is hard, I can do it).
Giving effort (the harder I try, the better I will get). It won't happen immediately but it will happen.
Working tough (to do the best I can, I sometimes have to do things that are not easy or fun).
Practical things you can do to develop persistence in your child
Discuss with your child repeatedly how his/her big efforts result in learning or success.
Provide strong, immediate reinforcement for effort your child puts toward work that he/she finds hard or boring (especially jobs around the home and homework).
Praise your child when he/she willingly does a task that is not fun without complaining.
Catch your child doing something that requires effort, and praise him/her for trying hard.
Praise your child for ongoing hard work.

December Curriculum Highlight
UFLI Foundations is a reading program created by the University of Florida Literacy Institute to help students become strong readers. It teaches foundational reading skills needed for good reading. The program is structured and can be used for teaching in early grades or for helping students who are struggling with reading. All K-2 classes at Sunrise utilize this program.
Here's how it works:
Teachers use lesson plans with an eight-step routine.
The steps include activities like practicing sounds, reading new words, and working with sentences.
The program focuses on important reading skills:
Blending and separating sounds
Matching letters to sounds
Reading words quickly and accurately
Learning new reading concepts
Practicing reading and writing
What makes UFLI Foundations special:
It balances structure with flexibility to meet students' needs.
It provides teachers with lesson plans and slides for teaching.
Using UFLI Foundations helps teachers learn more about reading acquisition and effective teaching methods.
It aligns with the science of reading by focusing on decoding, which is a crucial part of reading. This ensures that students can read well and understand what they read. The program is backed by research and evidence, showing that students who use UFLI Foundations make significant progress in reading skills. We are excited to be implementing this program in our K-2 classrooms this school year!
Parents/guardians must be volunteers in order to help in classrooms, eat lunch in the lunchroom with their child, or visit the playground to join their child at recess. The volunteer application is available by clicking the link below.
