News and Updates

Hello Orenco Families!

We are at the finish line for Semester 1 and I appreciate all the ways families at home have collaborated with us to make Distance Learning as good as we can make it. We do see growth taking place with students and we are doing our best to foster connections and support emotional health. News is rapidly changing, so I invite you to contact me with questions you may have. I am hosting a K-2 Google Meets call this week and will add other grade levels. Continue to reach out if you have questions, notice changes, or need help or support. Stay safe!

In service to you,

Allison Combs, Principal

Save the Date! Family ART Literacy Event--Friday, February 26

Join us for a night of family fun while we make patterned hearts colored with bleeding heart tissue paper. The project is based on Brazilian artist, Romero Britto, who combines elements of cubism, pop art, and graffiti painting in his work, using vibrant colors and bold patterns as a visual expression of hope, dreams, and happiness. The event is free and virtual and for all family members!

Students will be able to submit their artwork to Art to Remember where their artwork can be made into treasures to cherish for years to come. A portion of the profits supports the school. There is no obligation to participate in Art to Remember.

All Materials are provided. Please Sign up/RSVP and indicate how many individuals will be completing a project. 1 KIT=1 individual

Families will PICK-UP materials at Orenco in time for the event. If you cannot join, you can view the recording so you won't miss out!!

ONGOING ANNOUNCEMENTS BELOW

School Counselor "Remind" Code

Mrs. Hanson, our school counselor, has a Remind code for parents who are interested in receiving up-to-date resources. As soon as she hears about a community resource (food, mental health, housing, parenting classes...) she sends it along to parents. If you would like to receive these messages text b38dg3d to 81010. You can stop the messages at any time.

Absences and Attendance

Please contact your child's teacher or our school office if your child is ILL and will not be present for distance learning. This also applies for Family Illness (missing school due to a family illness). Phone messages are checked several times a day, 503-844-1370.

Email: bartolom@hsd.k12.or.us

Student attendance is marked daily as: Synchronous or Asynchronous or blank if we cannot verify attendance. District calls go out by 6 pm if your child's attendance is not verified.

Self-Serve Materials Pick-up

If you have an item to drop-off, there is a bin available each day from 12pm to 6 pm. Items can be dropped here like books, broken chromebooks, etc. It is helpful if you include a note with a name on it. We ask that if you have papers with identifying information, then call and we can arrange a pick-up with you.

Your teacher may have arranged a pick-up, too. Carts will roll out between 12 pm-6 pm daily if there are items to pick up. Walk to the South entrance--by the play structure and cafeteria entrance doors, not Birch Ave.

Free meals for all students

HSD is providing free meals to all students, Mondays through Fridays, when school is in session, through June 2021. Meals are being delivered via buses (Call transportation or check http://www.hsd.k12.or.us/mybus for stop locations and times). They are also available in a drive-through/walk-up between 11:45 am to 12:45 pm at six schools: Century High, Brown Middle, Evergreen Middle, Poynter Middle, South Meadows Middle, and Lincoln St Elementary. Any student or parent can go to any bus stop or hub location to get food.

  • If you are struggling to find a close meal stop, please don’t hesitate to reach out and call Transportation at 503-844-1123.

  • For families living in the “walk zone”, there are meal stops available to them. They do not need to walk out of their neighborhood or to the schools to pick up meals.
