Summer 2021
Summer 2021 at VACDES
VACDES Community:
After a school year like no other, we are looking forward to resuming activities that were not possible last summer. We are offering in-person summer school for a limited number of students. We will hold in-person Kindergarten orientation and we will plan on the usual Meet the Teacher day right before school begins.
- Summer school for students who were in grades K-4 this past year will be held July 13-15, 20-22, and 27-29 from 8:00 to 12:30.
- Students who will be in kindergarten in 2021-22 are invited to a Kindergarten Camp on July 20-22, 8:00-12:30. Additionally, parents and guardians of rising kindergarten students are invited to a kindergarten parent/guardian orientation on Wednesday, July 21, at 6 p.m. For orientation, enter the school through the doors off of the bus loop on Van Fossen Street to learn more about your child's upcoming kindergarten year.
- Meet the 2021-22 Teacher will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 3-7:00. This is an informal, drop-in event in which students and their families can stop by to meet their child's teacher and see their classroom for the upcoming school year.
- The First Day of School for 2021-22 will be Thursday, August 19.
Both staff and families have learned much about distance learning this past year. Looking ahead to 2021-22, we will continue to utilize some of the fantastic opportunities available through distance learning. Distance learning offers the opportunity for students to learn at their own pace and path every day of the week--even when school is not in session. Stay tuned for more information.
We can't wait to welcome you back to school on August 19. In the meantime, enjoy your summer. Please watch our website, social media accounts, and the local newspaper for updates on planning for the 2021-22 school year.
All the best,
Dr. Bryant, VACDES Principal
Dual Language Interest Sign-up Continues along with Registration for all Grades Pre-K-4
Please call the school at 540.665.6330 if your child will be new to VACDES in 2021-22 but you have not yet registered your child.
Are you interested in your kindergarten or 1st grade child participating in Dual Language instruction? If so, at the time you register your child for next year's kindergarten or 1st grade class, please complete a Dual Language Instruction interest form.
If more parents are interested in enrolling their child in dual language than spots are available, a lottery may be held to select the students.
Summer Office Hours
How to Make the Most of Summer
- Children who read at least 65 minutes a day usually score in the 98th percentile or above on reading achievement tests?
- But wait--a shorter amount of time STILL does a LOT of good in terms of keeping your child's success growing in reading. Children who read just 20 minutes a day usually score on the 90th percentile or above on reading achievement tests.
Your child has learned a lot in math this year, too. How can you help those math skills continue to grow?
- Ask your child to use an analog clock to tell you what time it is.
- Ask your child to tell you how much money there is in a few (to a handful) of coins.
- Have your child skip count while walking....count by 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, etc. to prepare for multiplication and division.
- Play games that require a score to be kept--and either have your child keep score or assist you in doing so.
- Look for shapes like squares, diamonds, rectangles, circles, and triangles in the world around us.
- Have your child help you measure ingredients for cooking.
- Look for fractions in the world around us--such as in a pizza, in parts of a group, or in line segments--start with 1/2 and 1/3 and build up to 1/4, 2/3, 4/6, etc.
Make this fun. If your child doesn't know something you're asking him or her to do, it's okay. Move on. We will work on these skills when the new year begins.
The very most important thing you can do is make your child feel like you love her or him just as he or she is. THAT is the basis for a summer and new year of success!
