Reading Workshop

Second graders are learning about non-fiction text features and how to use them while reading. Diagrams and labels help readers visually understand a topic and captions can give detailed information about a photograph. Students think about how texts are organized and why the table of contents, glossaries, headings, bold words, and indexes help them find information easier in a text. In addition to navigating the text, students also determine the topic, main idea, and important details. Check out the nonfiction books that your child is bringing home from the library!

Language Workshop

Students are learning all about investigators and investigations in the unit on Discoveries. Our focus question is 'How do we discover new ideas?' Some of the books we are reading are shown below.

Writing Workshop

Students are learning how to write like scientists! After many fun science experiments and investigations, students are now focused on turning their scientific notes into published science reports.

Thank you so much to families for all the wonderful materials. Second graders have had a blast learning about matter (solids, liquids, and gases) while learning to write like a scientist!

Science

Second graders have been exploring matter in all phases - solids, liquids, and gases. This week they had to prove their knowledge. Which balloon is filled with a solid? A liquid? A gas? How do you know? Ask your child about this fun investigation and how they could PROVE IT!

Math Workshop

Students completed their unit on data and graphing. Our next unit will be on fractions and geometry. Students will focus on 2-D and 3-D shapes and their attributes. Some of the vocabulary words students will learn include polygon, quadrilateral, side, angle, edge, face, and vertex.

Brrrr....Winter Weather is Coming!

The weather is turning colder. The kids are ready to have fun in the snow. Thank you so much for sending your child in their warm and cozy winter gear. Snow pants tend to look the same and are easily mixed up. Please make sure your child's clothing is labeled. Thanks!
