Media - Ms. McFadden
The Media Center has been bustling with activity this month. We celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a Beanstack Reading Challenge, a display of flags from Hispanic and Latino countries, and a display of books written by Hispanic and Latino authors. During November, we’ll celebrate National Native American Month. You can explore this topic together at home using the resources on https://www.nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/. Students can explore this topic more deeply by checking out a book! They can browse titles on LS2 or on this book list.
Hey BMS Readers! Are you ready to Read Grateful? Join us on Beanstack for our Read Grateful challenge during the month of November.
Our clubs are underway and meeting during ELTs. Students who might be interested in joining the following clubs should send Ms. McFadden a message on Schoology to be added to the roster:
Reading Railroaders (The BMS book club)
Writing Railroaders (The BMS creative writing club)
Chess Club
Ms. McFadden will be hosting Maker Mondays in the media center during Monday ELTs. Students should look for a sign-up the week before, posted in the Railroader Depot on Schoology. Maker Monday will be a time for us to explore various makerspace activities. On Monday, 10/25, we practiced our knot tying skills and created wearable art...friendship bracelets.
As we say goodbye to Term One, students should log into LS2 to be sure they don’t have any overdue books! Books can be returned to the media center at any point during the school day and can be placed in the outside book drop at any time as well.

Ms. Mills
6th and 7th graders are beginning an informational unit. Students will be examining informational and argumentative texts to determine how the point of view is conveyed, as well as how authors use different techniques to introduce, illustrate, and elaborate key ideas. Additionally, students will be determining the central idea of a text, and analyzing how particular parts contribute to the development of that central idea. Parts of an argument and persuasive techniques will also be examined. All students will begin reading towards their second term reading goal and logging minutes into Beanstack.

Math
Ms. Botker
Math Workshop students have been continuing to work on the skills needed to be successful in their grade-level math classes. 6th graders have been practicing decimal operations and will be moving into dividing fractions. 7th graders are wrapping up whole number operations and will be starting to multiply and divide decimals. 8th grade Math Workshop students will finish dividing fractions and then move onto ratios and proportions.
Ms. Cummings
6th grade Math
The 6th Grade students are working in the second math unit, which includes adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimal numbers, to the thousandths place. They will finish out the month learning how to divide fractions.
It is important that 6th grade math students know their math facts. They should be able to add single digit numbers and subtract numbers 1-20, automatically (ie. within 3 seconds). They should be able to multiply up to the 12 times table and divide with divisors through 12. Some ideas to practice include having your child make flashcards with the fact on one side and the answer on the other. After someone has verified the answers, the student should practice them regularly. There are also websites that have fact practice worked into games.
7th grade Math
The 7th Grade students are working in the second math unit, which includes computing unit rates, determining whether a relationship is proportional using tables, graphs, and equations, and identifying the constant of proportionality when given a proportional relationship.
7th grade Accelerated Math
The 7th Accelerated students are working in the second math unit, which includes evaluating square and cube roots of perfect squares and cubes, identifying differences between rational and irrational numbers, approximation of irrational numbers as rational numbers, converting decimals to fractions, and application of the Pythagorean theorem to determine unknown side lengths of right triangles and find the distance between two points on the coordinate plane.
Ms. Hargett

Mr. Livingston
Mr. Livingston's classes are all studying 2 variable equations for the month of November. Seventh grade is learning about proportional relationships and constant unit rates. The eighth grade classes are studying non-proportional linear relationships along with rate of change and slope. The Algebra class is beginning its understanding of linear and non-linear 2 variable equations. Quadratic and exponential equations will be a later focus that builds on these topics.
Mr. Miller
7th grade Math
We have now moved into Unit 2: “Ratios and Proportional Relationship”. In this unit, we will extend our understanding of dividing fractions by fractions (from Unit 1) to understand ratios and develop understanding of proportionality to solve single and multi-step problems. We will look at ratios and proportionality to solve a wide variety of percent problems, including those involving discounts, interest, taxes, tips, and percent increase or decrease. Students will graph proportional relationships and understand the unit rate informally as a measure of the steepness of the related line, called the slope.
Ms. Schmidt
8th Grade Math
Students are currently learning about rational and irrational number along with square and cubic roots. Students have learned how to change fractions to decimals, decimals to fractions, as well as how to change a repeating decimal into a fraction.

For Term 2, we will begin our study of the flow of Energy. In November, students will construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object. We will use that information to help us understand why falling objects accelerate and how friction impacts an object's motion. As November draws to a close, we will move on to static electricity.
Ms. Thrasher and Ms. Eaton
