MVR-III & ST. Louis Community College EARLY COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP
In an effort to provide our students with more dual credit opportunities, the Meramec Valley R-III School District is piloting an Early College Partnership (ECP) with St. Louis Community College for the 2017-2018 school year. Depending on the pathway selected, students attend the ECP full or part-time for one or two years replacing traditional high school courses taken during the junior and/or senior years. While in the ECP, students are enrolled in a curriculum consisting of college coursework taught by professors at STLCC – Wildwood. In addition to earning a high school diploma, upon successful completion students are able to earn an Associate’s of Arts Degree or meet the Missouri General Education Requirements. Currently, the district has 20 students participating in the ECP pilot this first year. If you have any questions pertaining to the ECP pilot, please feel free to contact me at qflexsenhar@mvr3.k12.mo.us or at 636-271-1414.
Sincerely,
Quinn Flexsenhar

Is your child or student gifted?
One goal of the Odyssey program for the 2017-18 school year is to increase the identification and gifted services to first and second-grade students. Two of several gifted traits to look for in the early grades are 1) the ability to self-teach and 2) the application of analogies. Please read the example for each with suggested teacher actions and see if you notice either of these traits in your students.
Self-teaching: look for students who independently learn next steps. An example of self-teaching acts could occur after a lesson on sentence structure. After a lesson on subject and predicate, a student demonstrates correct usage of commas for dependent clauses and appositives because they figured out complex sentences and therefore general comma rules. Teacher actions to gain insight into such behaviors are a) asking about older siblings, b) interest in reading, and/or c) parent involvement to find out if the knowledge was self-taught or gained by another method.
Application of Analogies, especially ones that seem removed or abstract, is another possible indication of gifted thinking.
For example, after learning a mnemonic device for left and right directions, a student is overheard saying to herself, “Brown Bryan Doggie Dance.” The student explains that their neighbor is Bryan and he lives in a brown brick house to the left while her dog loves running on the right side of the yard when playing catch and the wagging tail makes the dog look like he’s dancing. Teacher actions to gain insight are asking; a) if that’s how parents taught them direction, b) can the student give other examples of direction, and/or c) can the student give an example of a double left or a combination left then right.
