Student & Family Update 05.09.21
Thank you!
Social/Family Connections
As we finish up this school year and plan ahead for next fall, our counselors and administration will be meeting this upcoming week to go through our ideas and feedback from families. We will use email information from you as well as current grade data. With this, we will talk about connection strategies currently (to finish off this year) as well as relay information to the high school on our current 8th grade students. In addition, part of our recovery plan will be reconnecting with families prior to school beginning next fall. We will begin brainstorming ideas now, so we can be ready in August to provide this support.
Please fill out the survey below and/or send an email if you have any ideas or information on supports needed. The purpose of the survey below is to learn about what you need and how schools can help. The information will be used as part of the district Academic and Student Well-Being Recovery Plan. There is still time to click on a link below to provide us with some feedback in our next steps.

National School Nurse Day
We want to express my appreciation for all that Suzie Bliss & Kim Smelser have done throughout this year for our students and families. Their communication, organization, as well as care for the safety of our entire school has been the best. We appreciate you!
Upcoming Events
7th & 8th Grade Elective Choices
We will be posting a google form (also linked below) on all students grade level classrooms on Monday. We would like all current 6th & 7th grade students to fill this form out by Friday, May 14th. This form will be used to organize our student schedules for the 2021-2022 school year.
Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing
Part of our recovery plan currently and a big question for us to determine is where students are currently at in relation to grade level standards. We will only be completing the "survey" portion (shorter version of the test, but should give us helpful data).
Testing dates/outline:
Math:
- Cohort B/Remote (May 20th...finish up May 21st as needed)
- Cohort A (May 24th...finish up May 25th as needed)
WEEK between because of Memorial Day weekend (short week 36 - 4 days)
ELA:
- Cohort B/Remote (June 3rd...finish up June 4th as needed)
- Cohort A (June 7th...finish up June 8th as needed)
End of Year Celebrations
We have tentatively set our end of the year drive thru event for Monday, June 14th from 3pm-6pm. There are a lot of details to still be worked out, but we wanted to get the date down. For now, we do know that PTO will be giving all students a little something and help make this event something special for all students. Our thoughts will be to have 8th grade students invited in the middle hour (4-5pm) so families with younger or older siblings can overlap and not have to come twice. I have no doubt this will all come together, but it is definitely in the beginning stages of planning.

- Allison has been consistent in attendance, participation on line and in person, turn-in rate and having a great positive attitude. She asks good questions and helps her peers. She is a great example of a student who has risen above our current challenges and adapted to maximize her educational opportunities.

She sets a great example by having her camera on and is engaged in our learning. Allison is a student that makes our classrooms/school better. I appreciate all of her hard work and feel she is very deserving of this award!
- All through distance learning she has participated and had her camera on most if not ALL of the classes. She maintains high grades (A's) and is an exceptional student in the classroom as well as remotely. She's involved in activities (dance) and keeps busy. Beyond academics she's a joy to have in class, brings a smile to all my meets/classes. Even if she's laughing at me..
Carter R.
- Throughout the challenge of remote learning, Carter has continued to seek challenges, pushing himself to achieve his best. Although having his own opinions, he is very accepting of those who don't hold the same view. He is always respectful and shows grit!
- Carter is a hard worker. He always goes the extra mile and is kind to everyone.
- He is inquisitive and kind. He works hard with initiative and flexibility. He is a problem solver and is very resourceful.
- Carter was not in the advanced math track when he entered 6th grade. Carter worked incredibly hard in 6th grade to achieve the goal of going into Algebra as a 7th grader. Since then, Carter has been the top student in Algebra and Geometry these last two years. I'm really impressed with Carter's work ethic and more importantly, his character.
- Carter is a respectful and hard working student. He is a great role model for others.
- Carter is a great young man. He is respectful and kind. He is a hard worker and does his best to make others feel included. I have seen Carter hold doors for others, pick up garbage and he also says "thank you" often at the end of class. I have enjoyed being Carter's teacher and feel he is very deserving of this award!
Thank you both for all you do at Port Susan Middle School!

Work Drop Dates
Thank you students for checking your google classrooms and emails daily. Our staff is staying as close as possible with our weekly plan and/or communicating changes with students on Thursdays. This has been very helpful for consistency.
It looks like we are down to one page of drop dates remaining for this school year and if the rest of the weeks go as quickly as this week, it is going to go fast!
I hope you have enjoyed your weekend!
