Community Service in Action
South Atlanta High School Target 2021 Community Service Project
Each year, students of the South Atlanta High School Target 2021 program are provided with the opportunity to develop and implement a community service project. This year’s project focused on the patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital. Fedora Brown, Student Support Coach, purchased a variety of teddy bears and the students garnished them with simple heartfelt messages.
The teddy bears will be delivered to the hospital in hopes that they will make young patients who are currently experiencing medical challenges, a little happier. What better way to brighten the day of ailing children than to provide them with a comfort buddy who can be there when they can’t.

A Day in the Life of a Student Support Coach

What was your motivation for becoming a Student Support Coach?
I love helping people. I have been working with youth for over 15 years. Becoming a student support coach has provided me with a platform to assist students on a deeper level - financial, mental health, and mentorships. Providing wrap-around services is extremely important and having access to these different resources plays a vital role in a students success rate.
Every day I come to work is a rewarding experience! Seeing the smiles on my students' face when I say good morning or ask them if there is anything I can do to help them is a joy. Last school year, I witnessed my first graduating class. I had one particular student who was struggling through out the school year. She was homeless, in addition to having some anger management issues. Not only did she graduate from Maynard Jackson last year, she called me just last week to notify me that she was enrolled at Atlanta Metro College. To not only witness the struggle of my student, but to also be apart of the reason why they are successful is the most rewarding part of my job.
My students have taught me how to laugh and not be so serious all the time. Laughter is important.
If my students take anything with them, I hope it is my voice in their ear telling them to never give up. I always push them and tell them that no matter what happens, keep fighting. Persevere!!
Describe your typical “Target 2021” day?

Check emails/meet with students: 9- 11
Lunch duty:12:15-1:30
