The documentary Into The Abyss demonstrates how many people believe that the death penalty should be completely eliminated because those are humans being killed.
Purpose
The purpose of this documentary was to show a crime and give you different perspectives of the people affected and how they view the death penalty. They go into depth on the crime and of how and who committed it and also show the victims and how they felt about what happened. Also show different people who handle stuff with the death penalty and how they feel about it.
Example 1; Explain the whole crime seen from start to begging
During the begging if the film they explain what exactly happened during the crime. They show how they broke in and how they eventually killed the victims. They give you this so you can determine whether the killer deserved the death penalty or not.
Example 2; Talking to the actual killer
Then they proceed to actually talk to the killer. During this scene it almost seems like he doesn't have much regret for killing those people. So this could further more help the purpose on making you have a sense of wanting him to get the death penalty or not.
Example 3; talking to the victims family
They show you the victims family's so you can so just how much pain and suffering the killer has brought to these people. They show you 2 different victims families and they both seem to want him to die rather then stay in prison. So this prospective might change your mind on how you view the death penalty.
Conclusion
In conclusion the authors purpose for this documentary was to show you how someones crime can affect a family and a whole community and determine rather they should spend life in prison or be given the death penalty. The killer killed several people just for a car. and for that reason you might think he deserves to spend his life in prison or maybe even be given the death penalty.
