JEFCOED recognizes three CMS Band Instrumentalists

The Corner Middle School Band had three students compete recently against musicians from all across Jefferson County for a spot in the Jefferson County School District's All-County Band. All three students who competed earned a spot with the performance group. Congratulations to Addisyn Henderson for being named second chair tuba, James Cannon for being named first chair alto saxophone, and Jase Perkins for being named first chair percussion!

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 cancellations and re-scheduling, another Honor Band in our area had to change their dates. It ended up being scheduled at the exact same time as our JEFCOED All-County Concert. That means that we may not be able to have an actual honor band festival to attend this school year. The school district is working on an alternative activity, but no arrangements have been finalized at this time. Regardless, we are so proud of these students for this outstanding accomplishment!

FCCLA Organizes Community Service Project for Infants in the North Jefferson Area

In Family and Consumer classes (formerly known as Home Economics), it is never too early for the students at Corner Middle to develop home and life skills for the future and work as a community service organization. The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter at CMS has been working to do just that in the past months since the pandemic hit.

Members of the chapter have recently conducted a RADA kitchenware fundraiser whose proceeds go to providing much-needed supplies to the North Jefferson Women's Center. That organization received $400 from the FCCLA that will go to the purchase of supplies for women and children in north Jefferson County. In addition, the group will also host a baby shower for that group at Corner Middle School in April to get supplies for newborns and infants in need. Anyone who is interested in providing diapers, wipes, or other baby items for the FCCLA shower, please contact sponsor, Makena Edge, at medge@jefcoed.com.

Practice for Virtual Competition Adds Up to Math Team Success

The Corner Middle School Math Teams are just beginning their virtual competition season with a practice tournament test this week just before they competee in the Pizitz Middle School Online Math Tournament on April 15th and the Jefferson County Online Math Tournament the week of April 25th. The team has been participating in the MathCounts Problem of the Week and its extended studies have focused on patterns, logic, and combinatorics.

According to 7th and 8th Grade Math Team Coach, Jennifer Rouse, "I am super proud of our mathletes. Every single one of them participates in something else outside of academic teams and clubs. They're juggling band, robotics, multiple sports, and CTA and still finding time to make practices a priority, sometimes splitting their time between two practices in one day. That level of commitment is what makes them excellent."
