Quiz Answers and where to learn more!
It's important that our students realize all of the reasons people create websites and that the majority of websites are created to sell, advertise and make money!
To learn more about search engines and how they work go to www.lhvlc.com, Search Process Tab-> Search Strategies. It's important for our students to know how search engines work in order to best find the results they are looking for.
Most people simply review the results from the top of the list. Because people can "optimize results" so that their websites get to the top of the list, this is not the best option. In addition, there is no way of knowing if your "best result" lies on the second or third page of results. The best tactic is to limit results by using the tools shared on the library website's Search Strategies page.
Search Engines primarily work by matching key terms. Small words skew results. In addition, some small words act as search operators.
Yup! Absolutely anyone. Google searches all of the "free" web and does not eliminate websites because they are inaccurate, mean spirited, hate filled, etc.
See complete tools on the Website Evaluation (Search Process-> Website Evaluation) page on the library website. Remember to tell students that they need to be skeptical when evaluating information. Website evaluation takes wisdom and is a critical thinking process.
They can't access the Hidden Web. This information is contained on databases that search engine's "spiders" can't crawl. Many of these databases require passwords to access.
In addition, students need to be aware of copyright laws when "reusing" other peoples' work. "Fair Use" honors most educational purposes, however due to the ease of publishing content on the internet, there's an increasing need to respect the rights of original creators of information. To see more about this important issue, go to www.lhvlc.com, the Cyber Ethics tab -> Copyright and Fair Use page.
In addition to the need to cite pictures, photos and video, students need to evaluate these resources as they would any other source of information. It is important for students to go back to where the picture was originally published to evaluate the resource correctly.

I try to add posts here that either talk about what's going on in the library, info I'd like to share with students, or questions I 'd like to ask them. This may be a good way to encourage student involvement with text by having them write comments or even a guest post!
