What's News at Magee?

#2 - November 2018

Artist in Residence

Last year, our PTO focused on raising funds to bring in an Artist in Residence. We are excited to work with Marina Lee beginning in November. Ms. Lee has done work with Cushing in the past. She will be here at Magee on November 20 and then the week of November 26-30. Ms. Lee will work on the various projects during art classes with Miss Hanson. ALL Magee students - from Early Childhood through 5th grade will have a hand in the creations for our building.

Ms. Lee spent time here at Magee and on our campus. Students have been involved in taking photos to incorporate the beauty of the Magee campus into the art being created.

More information on Ms. Lee can be found at: www.marinalee.com

Goals!

What we know about success is that setting goal is integral! If you think about it, we do it in many aspects of our lives - maybe it is goal to go back to school, change careers, complete a 5K, create something new, etc. Students and learning work the same way!

John Hattie, well known for his various meta-analyses of educational research, shares that Student Self-Efficacy (beliefs, dispositions, attitudes) produces an effect size of .92 on student achievement. That is important to know because when an effect size is over .40, it increases student achievement. Two additional important effect sizes to understand are Student Effort (.77) and Student Evaluation and Reflection (.75). All three of these pieces are a part of student goal setting, which is a focus in all of our classrooms across Magee. Students are setting goals across curriculuar areas as well.

You can see the work your child is doing related to goal setting, reflection and evaluation by checking out their Seesaw Journal or asking them what they are working on!

Wellness Wednesday

Healthy minds and healthy bodies are the key to student success both in the classroom and out. The same holds true for staff. You may have noticed, or heard about, Wellness Wednesdays this year at Magee. Each Wednesday, staff and students are encouraged to dress comfortably and participate in the Wednesday "activity" shared on morning announcements with Mr. Staver, Mr. Krieger, Miss Hanson and guests! These activities can be done at any point during the day, and the Google Slide presentation is accessible all the time to allow for it to be used any day - not just Wednesdays!

Check out our announcements to participate in Wellness Wednesday wherever you are!

Tuesday Tours

Each school day, we open our doors to a community of adults and young people to continue our work to preparing students to be ready academically, personally, and as citizens. We are proud of the work we are doing and beginning next week, we want to provide our parents a unique opportunity to learn more of the details of how that happens.

Beginning October 30, we will begin hosting the first in a series of Tuesday Tour Days.

A Tour Day agenda will be the following:

  1. Greeting

  2. Visit Magee classrooms and learning spaces (20-30 minutes)

  3. Debriefing and Discussion (20-30 minutes)

Your tour will be hosted by Mrs. Sterner. Depending on the learning interests and questions of the group, we will visit a few different places during that portion of the morning.

Interested in joining us? Please complete this short survey to provide us more details about you and what you’d like to learn on your visit. We will limit the number of parents participating on any one tour in order to minimize the disruption of the tours to our students’ learning.

See you soon - here at school!

Epic Build - Monday, November 26

Computer Science education starts in elementary school, which is why we are so thrilled to invite you to see what your children have been up to! See how Computer Science is a part of your child's day and how this important literacy ignites his/her learning. Students will show you what they know about conditionals, loops, sprites, and a whole lot more.

The event will begin with a student-given keynote address and move to the showcase, or Epic Build, shortly after. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early so that we can begin at the scheduled time.

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade:

1:00 PM Presentation-Gym, followed by a Student Showcase until 2:00 PM

3rd - 5th Grade:

2:15 PM Presentation-Gym, followed by Student Showcase until 3:15 PM

Parent Resources

The Kettle Moraine School District Parent Resource Network (PRN) is a group created by parents for parents. They offer a variety of programming throughout the year on topics that are relevant to parenting today. All parents are welcome to attend.

In addition, PRN is run by all volunteers. If you are looking for a way to be involved, it would be wonderful to have Magee represented in the KM PRN! For more information, click HERE.

A resource from the University of Wisconsin-Extension has a series of articles for parents and educators. While they all have value, one was of particular interest as it connects to students setting goals. Click HERE to read "Small Steps, Big Goals".
