Letter from Jordan Mills...

Dear Bridgeport Families,

Our staff and students are busy teaching and learning as much as they can during these last few weeks of school! We are also getting ready for the upcoming school year and I would like to let you know about a few staff changes.

First, congratulations to fourth grade TWI teacher Chavo Garcia on accepting a position as a TWI Social Studies teacher at Tigard High School for the 21-22 school year. We are excited for the students and families there, though we sure will miss him at Bridgeport! In related news, our long term substitute teacher, Jorge Porrata, will officially join our staff as a fourth grade TWI teacher next year! Welcome, Maestro Porrata! Additionally, we will also say goodbye to fifth grade teacher Lisa Johnson as she and her family join their extended family in Florida. Mrs. Johnson will be teaching seventh and eighth grade social studies this upcoming school year. We wish her the very best on her move and new position!

There are also two videos in this week’s Barker that you’ll want to take a look at. One is from Julie Schmidt, current third grade teacher and Bridgeport music teacher. She explains in her video that she has moved to Vancouver and will not return to Bridgeport next year. We will miss Miss Julie terribly and wish her the best of luck on her new adventure! Additionally, there is a video from counselor/psychologist Jordan Karr who will be leaving at the end of the school year for a position counseling children as a psychologist. Dr. Karr has made many positive contributions to Bridgeport and though we will miss him, we are excited for this next chapter in his career.

Lastly, I would like to announce that we have hired Bobbie Brown into our Bridgeport Assistant Principal position! As you know, Dr. Brown has been serving Bridgeport as our Dean of Students since September. She has spent her career as a school psychologist holding a variety of positions at a number of levels. This spring Dr. Brown completed her doctoral program at the University of Portland. She and her husband, Matt, have two children, ages 15 and 17. She is incredibly skilled at supporting students’ social and emotional needs as well as school wide systems for behavior and instruction. Welcome, Dr. Brown! I look forward to sharing more about the other new members of the Bridgeport team that we will welcome next fall.

Have a nice Memorial Day weekend. See you on Tuesday, June 1st.

Video Message from Miss Julie (Click below to watch)

Hi Bridgeport families,

I hope you are doing well. I created a space where members of our community could find counseling, food, and other community resources. I hope this website will help us stay connected during this unsettling time. On the website you will find resources for supporting students at home, such as breathing and relaxation tools, ways to support children in identifying their emotions, and strategies for managing difficult behaviors. I will also post read alouds periodically and will be picking stories that seem relevant to the current time and the current needs of our students.

Thank you,

Jordan Karr
