BES Weekly Update
Issue No. 8
A Note From Principal Paquette
Dear BES Parents and Guardians,
I hope this newsletter finds you all doing well and enjoying what is the beginning of spring like weather. It seems as though we have turned the corner and are on our way to sunshine and warmth.
This week I would like to highlight the work of our special area teachers (PE, music, library, art and technology). BES has outstanding special area teachers in Coach Carter and Coach Trudeau, Ms. Wilson in music, Ms. Banker in library, Mrs. Wooster in art and Ms. Woodward in technology. These teachers have been working tirelessly throughout this digital teaching and learning in order to bring lessons to your children in their content areas. For some, this digital transition was smooth as they were already using Google Classroom in technology and library. But for others, like PE, music and art, the transition was more involved. Yet these teachers all continue to engage with and offer lessons and activities for students to complete that are exciting, invigorating and fun. If you have not yet stopped in for a Google Meet or asked your child about their assignments in their special areas, please do so! Below in this newsletter you will find the information for how to “find” your child’s special area teacher’s classroom. Just as when we are in the school building, it is expected that students participate in their special area class during this distance teaching and learning. If your child has not yet been participating each week in these classes, be sure they start. The added bonus to the work being put in for special areas is that the assignments are often fun, relaxing and tap into skills and abilities that students love. Many special area tasks have been highlighted in our past newsletters. Students have been creating amazing works of art, participated in dancing and music lessons, taken part in STEM projects and completed tabata challenges with Coach. I always enjoy seeing the smiles on students' faces as they take part in these important activities. Keep up the great work!
Plans are in the works for the distribution of student belongings. Thank you for your patience as we develop these plans in order to stay in accordance with the PAUSE order and safety guidelines set forth by the State. Talks are also in the works for how we commemorate our fifth grade and kindergarten graduates as well. As soon as plans are finalized they will be shared via email and Facebook pages (District, BES elementary page, BES PTO page).
As this nice weather is upon us, please realize that daily attendance is continuing to be taken based on participation in Google Meets and turning in assignments. If you or your child is struggling with any aspect of digital teaching and learning, please reach out. We are here to help you and want to continue to see your child grow and develop during this time. Stay safe and well.
Yours in education,
Sarah Paquette

Ms. Lamontagne Shares Counseling Tips for Families
Are we there yet?
That's what most of us are thinking when it comes to the changes in our daily lives since the pandemic started, kids included. In the past few weeks, there has been a drastic increase in adults needing support for students to stay motivated with their school work. There is no magic wand to help with this situation, but we do know that routines, boundaries, consistency and modeling will help us to get there. As adults facing something we have never faced in our lifetimes, we need to set the example of how we keep going and demonstrate strategies that help us to handle hard things. The following two graphics give information to share and discuss with your student as we struggle with "why do I keep having to do my schoolwork at home?". Please reach out to me at lamontagne.michele@bcsdk12.org if you need support.
We are here for you!

Mother's Day
In Mrs. Poe's class last week, we focused on Mother's Day. Students enjoyed listening to the book, "The Night Before Mother's Day." Students also worked on following directions, fine motor skills and decision making skills while doing a directed drawing for their mothers. We kicked all moms out of the room and the students did project independently or with the help of a sibling. They were all unique and beautiful! I'm sure there were many happy Moms that received them.
We also went on a shape scavenger hunt around the house one day. When students returned with the shapes, they had to try to draw the shapes. It was a lot of fun racing against the timer to get back with the shapes.
Pictured below, is Allie with her flowers.

Science is fun in First Grade!
First graders have three different science projects to choose from this week for their science learning. They could complete an experiment to see if color affects temperature using ice cubes, different colored construction paper, and sunlight. Another project was crazy camouflage. Students could create sea creatures camouflaged into their surroundings to protect themselves from predators. The final project was creating their own musical instrument using materials from home. Below, is a picture of Lilyanna and the instrument she created.
Does color affect temperature?
Below, Grace is completing the science experiment, "Does color affect temperature?" The answer is, yes! The darker paper attracts more sunlight, which melts the ice quicker.
Second Grade with Mrs. Hynes
Flat Stanley
Our class read Flat Stanley last week. Then I received a Flat Kellen to take on some adventures. He is headed to the driving range with my son to hit some golf balls.
