Counselors' Corner

Community Service is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, feel good about themselves, and give back to the community. All students can participate in community service with the supervision of their parent(s), but it is optional. Students may earn a Community Service Pin for completing 25 hours or more of service. There are lots of ways to still do community service, even with distance learning. Check out community service ideas on the Counseling page of the Toll website: https://www.gusd.net/Page/14357

8th Grade students going for Green must complete 10 hours of Community Service and Gold Students must complete 20 hours as part of these honor programs. More information regarding Green and Gold Honors will be going out to 8th graders next week.

Counselors Office Hours are here! If you have a question or just want to chat with a counselor, pop into one of our office hours via Zoom. We have office hours available every day before and after school and during the lunch break. Links will be posted in the grade level Counseling Classrooms.

Attendance & Classroom Engagement

What does it mean to be marked 'present' during distance learning? All students must log in to the live instructional meeting (a Zoom or Google Meet) and remain on and engaged through the entire period. Students who do not stay for the entire period or log in late will be marked as absent or tardy.

You can support your child's success by removing their phone or tablet during instructional time. When students are on campus, they are not allowed to access their phones. Supporting this guideline at home prevents students from being distracted by texts, social media or gaming. Teachers will only be engaging students through their Chromebook or other laptop/desktop computer. Students do not need any other personal device during classtime.

VILS Information for Parents

Our school is participating in the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) initiative, which includes a multi-year study of the program’s impact on teachers and students. The primary goal of this study is to measure the effect of providing middle school students with mobile technology and 24/7 Internet access. To this end, we will be conducting a series of research activities including school-level administrative data collection, student and teacher surveys, and interviews.

Your child is not required to participate in this study. If you wish for your child to be excluded from the research study, please complete the opt-out form linked below and submit it to Mr. Der-Megerdichian sdermegerdichian@gusd.net . We also have paper copies of this form in our office for your convenience.
