PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear SESS families,

It is hard to believe that it is already November. There have been many exciting initiatives happening at SESS, with many more to come in the busy weeks ahead. Thank you to everyone who came out to our Parent Teacher Interviews. It was wonderful to see such a great turnout, and we hope to continue to create strong communication between our school and families. Parents and guardians are always welcome and encouraged to directly contact teachers or administration if you have any questions. Staff contacts are all available on our school website, and we regularly update our school facebook page with news and events.

Some of the recent great things happening at SESS include the Socials 11/Biology 11 class trip to Vancouver and the Sr. French class trip to Mannng Park. As well, we are very proud of our Sr. Boys Soccer Team who are currently competing at the Provincial Championships in Duncan, and our SESS Swim Team members who all qualified for the Provincial Championships in Richmond after a strong performance at the Okanagan Valley Championships. As always we are so appreciative of our dedicated staff and members of the community who provide these memorable opportunities for our students.

As the school year progresses, we continue be inspired by the strength and the support of our community, and to strive to always provide a positive and supportive learning experience for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Naryn Searcy

Important Reminder: Student Lates & Absences

Please notify our office staff (250-499-2727) if your child is going to be late or absent from school. We know that students are more successful when they consistently attend school, and we appreciate your support with this. SS11/Bio11 VANCOUVER FIELD TRIP

On October 15th and 16th, the grade 11 Social Studies and Biology cross-curricular students attended a field trip to Vancouver. Students visited the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, the Vancouver Aquarium, and the UBC Museum of Anthropology. At the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery students learned about programs to stock BC lakes with hatchery raised trout. Students also learned about sturgeon, as well as invasive species such as bass. After visiting the hatchery, the class travelled to the Vancouver Aquarium. Students were divided into small groups and completed a three-hour session of activities, and also received a behind the scenes tour of Vancouver Aquarium. Students got to handle live invertebrates like sea stars, crabs, urchins, and anemones in the wet lab. Students also got to go into the research areas of the aquarium to see things such as the jellyfish lab. After the session, the group slept at the aquarium next to the sea lion tank. On the second day students explored the aquarium before it opened. Highlights included the playful sea otters and seeing the dolphins getting fed. After leaving the aquarium, the group drove through Vancouver to the University of British Columbia. At UBC, the group completed a tour of the Museum of Anthropology. While at the Museum, students had the opportunity to learn about the art, history and culture of BC’s First Peoples. Highlights included the exhibits displaying totem poles, house poles, long houses, and baskets. The museum presented many thought provoking displays that made students think about the importance of Indigenous culture. The students were wonderful ambassadors for SESS on this trip. They asked lots of insightful questions and were always very respectful of the displays and presenters throughout the trip. Thank you to all the students, teachers, parents, and school staff that made this trip possible.

REPORTING 2018-19

Many schools across the province and our district are now using a 4-point proficiency scale to replace letter grades from kindergarten to grade 9. This new reporting order will be mandated for all schools for the 2019-20 school year. In order to prepare for this shift, teachers at SESS will spend this year familiarizing themselves and their students with the new proficiency scale and starting to use elements of it in their classrooms. The use of a proficiency scale instead of a letter grade is intended to allow us to better communicate a clearer picture of student understanding and performance. If parents have any questions about the new proficiency scale please contact Ms. Searcy nsearcy@sd53.bc.ca or Mr. Eccleston tecclest@sd53.bc.ca.

Scholastic BOOKFAIR

Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here's what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

  • Set the example. Let children see you read.
  • Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It's a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child's reading habits.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

FILM SHOWING: ANGST

During the last week of November at SESS, students in grades 9 & 10 will be watching the film Angst which was created to help share information around anxiety in teens. The school screening will be followed up with a community showing at 6:30 pm on Thursday Nov.29th in the SESS drama room where we invite parents and their children to attend.

About Angst

Angst is a 46-minute film and virtual reality experience that explores anxiety, its causes, effects and what we can do about it. The filmmakers’ goal is to have a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Angst features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer, or have suffered, from anxiety and what they’ve learned about it. The film includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, as well as help, resources and tools. FIND YOUR FIT TOUR COMING TO SESS

The Work BC Find Your Fit tour is visiting communities all across British Columbia. The tour is targeted at students in grades 5-10 to help them discover a range of in-demand careers in B.C. through fun and interactive activities. Students will visit career activity stations where they can take part in a hands on activity related to a specific career. These activities will help students uncover their strengths and interests, giving them the knowledge they need to get started with their career planning. They'll then move on to the labour market information station, where they can dig deeper into a career of their choice. (From the Work BC website).

The Find Your Fit Tour will be available for students and their families to visit on Thursday Nov. 8th from 3:15-7:00 pm in the elementary gymnasium. Please note that this time overlaps with our PAC carnival (in the secondary gym) so parents and children will have the opportunity to visit both on Thursday evening.
